Goddess 'Corona' Devi in Tamil Nadu...A temple comes up in the state to defeat COVID-19!

Novel Coronavirus has become a part of life globally in the last two years in one way or the other. While it has haunted and confined the lives of millions of people across the world, it has also tested the medical capabilities to counter such menaces. It didn't stop there as on the other hand, several events in India had given a shape to the virus on the objects that are used daily, displaying the people have started to brace up the pandemic.

The events were a mixture of weird and hilarious gesture that they went viral across the country. Some of the events include developing Corona helmet and Corona jewellery and Coronavirus-themed menu in hotels including Corona-shaped dosa. While these were viral during the first wave, the severity of the second wave of the pandemic had now put up a temple for Corona and with no surprise, the goddess goes by a name of 'Corona Devi'.

The temple was made possible with a belief that the goddess will defeat the pandemic and it has been erected in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. According to reports, the brain of the temple is Kamatchipuri Adhinam and the temple is constructed on the premises of Adhinam at Kamatchipuram near Irugur on the outskirts of Coimbatore. The temple has a reminiscing seed of the 1900s where there was a culture among the residents to worship Plague Mariamman Temple to contain the Plague disease when it was rampant a century ago.

The consecration ceremony was conducted on Tuesday and the poojas were performed from Wednesday. The Adhinam said that when people were suffering from the plague and other deadly diseases a few centuries ago, they had started worshipping the god, who they believed could only help them during the difficult times. Similarly, the Adhinam has created and consecrated 'Corona Devi', a black stone idol that is about 1.5 ft long.

The Adhinam said that it strongly believes that the goddess Corona Devi will protect people COVID-19. The seers of the Adhinam said that they will be performing special prayers for 48 days. However, devotees and the general public would not be allowed to participate in the prayers because of the pandemic restrictions. The Adhinam had released a video in which the Chief had urged the public to follow the government guidelines to contain the virus spread.

The temple is first-of-its-kind in Tamil Nadu and the birth of Goddess Corona Devi has been going viral with several social media users calling the temple the outcome of superstition. Though the temple is new for Tamil Nadu, it is the second temple of Corona Devi in South India. In June last year, a temple priest from Kadakkal in Kollam district in Kerala had put up an idol of the deity near his residence to defeat the pandemic.
