Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with 'Global Goalkeeper' award that was awarded by Bill and Melinda Gates foundation in honor for the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' campaign launched by his government.
Addressing after being one of the laureates, Narendra Modi had said that he shares the honor with crores of Indians for their strong contribution towards shaping the campaign with huge success. He proclaimed the significance of the award that was conferred to him in the year of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary and added that the country will lift up the challenges lie before the development when 130 crore people unite in taking a pledge.
He further stated that no country had seen flagging such campaign of cleanliness in recent times which had driven towards constructing over 11 crore sanitation facilities around the country in last five years. He added that the people of India had took full control of the campaign, although it was launched by Indian government.
While speaking about the government's initiative, he cited that the World Health Organization had admitted the potential efforts taken by the government in grounding basic sanitation across the country and stated that this campaign has been on international reach where it not only had improved the lives of Indians, but adding to that it also played vital and significant aspect in driving towards achieving the goals of United Nations.
'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' was one of the campaigns launched by Modi's first term of government on October 2, 2014 and the government data had indicated that the campaign has been cementing its roots successfully where most of Indian villages had been equipped with necessary sanitation facilities with around 10 crore toilets have been built in last five years.
This has been one of the important international honors for India's 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' mission that was received by the Prime minister days before addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
On the other hand, the group of Indians had knocked the floors of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation through their letters that had urged the foundation to take back its announcement of honoring Narendra Modi and they have cited his human rights record in India since his party assumed to power. While defending its decision, the foundation had said that over 500 million of Indians doesn't have proper accessibility for safe sanitation before such initiatives and now majority of Indians have, which had shown the impact that were been realized by Indians.
The founder of Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and one of the world's richest billionaires Bill Gates had honored the Prime minister with the award.
