Under the grounds of joining the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, a german student who was pursuing his second semester in IIT Madras was ordered to leave the country on Monday by the immigration department after alleging that he violated his visa rules by involving in the protests against the controversial act.
24-year-old Jakob Lindenthal, a native of Dresden, Germany, was an exchange student in IIT Madras. He had reportedly seen in the protests and rallies across the city that were organized to voice against the act. Last week, he took part in the protest in Valluvar Kottam where he was seen holding a placard which read '1933-1945, We have been there' and through his message, he recalled the Hilter's Nazi regime in Germany that persecuted the Jews.
On Monday, he was told by the faculty to visit the immigration department and, the reports say that he was directed to leave India after the discussion with the department. During his meet with the immigration department, he was allegedly asked about his views on the Citizenship Amendment Act. The reports had stated that he was informed to meet the immigration authorities as there was an issue with his residence permit and when he appeared before the authorities, he was reportedly told to table his opinion on the protests against CAA where he stood at his stance of opposing it after which the immigration authorities ordered him to leave the country immediately.
The sources had said that during his meet with the department, he was instructed to sign a letter of apology that he eventually rejected and in the wake of that, the immigration authorities had warned him of getting deported unless he leaves the country. In its order, the authorities had alleged that he violated his permit. After having been ordered to leave the country, he vacated the hostel and the institute and he booked his flight tickets by himself and the sources had added that he would be embarking the plane from Chennai on Tuesday night and he will reach Germany through New Delhi.
It has been reported that he decided to leave India despite the German Embassy came forward to offer him a legal aid to challenge the order. According to immigration, the country in which a foreigner resides holds power to scrap the visa and to deport a foreigner from the country under the grounds of violating the norms of the visa and permit. In general, foreigners who are granted a visa to the country are supposed to stay with their purpose of visit but some of the countries won't bar the international students to take part in the protests.
Jakob Lindenthal, an exchange student from the Dresden University of Technology has been pursuing a Masters in Physics in IIT Madras and he was told to leave the country when he has one more semester to complete on the campus.
