Fresh trouble for Gautam Gambhir: His foundation is guilty of illegally stocking up Covid medicines!

Veteran cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir has invited fresh trouble as his foundation has been accused of stocking up Covid medicines illegally. Gambhir, who is now a BJP MP in Lok Sabha, runs the Gautam Gambhir foundation, a non-profit organization, based in Delhi. The 39-year-old has been found guilty of illegally stocking up medicines.

According to reports, the Delhi government's drug controller has on Thursday informed the High Court that Gambhir's Foundation has been found guilty of unauthorisedly stocking, procuring, and distributing Covid medicines. The drug controller has asserted to the court that action will be taken without delay against the foundation and drug dealers like other cases that are brought to its attention.

The court has asked the drug controller to file status reports on further progress in these cases within six weeks and listed the matter for hearing on July 29. The reports say that Gambhir's Foundation was accused of procuring and unauthorisedly stocking up a huge quantity of Fabilu, medicine meant for COVID-19 affected patients.

On Monday, the High Court had slammed the drug controller for not properly examining how the former criceketer had procured the drug without consent. During the hearing on Thursday, the court has observed that Gautam Gambhir Foundation does not hold any drug license as required by the law for purchase, stocking, or distribution of the drugs.

The Drugs Control Department has moved its report to the court on Thursday in which it has said that Gautam Gambhir Foundation has contravened the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and rules thereunder and therefore have committed an offence which is prosecutable/punishable under section 27 (b) (iii) and 27 (d) of the act. According to reports, Gambhir's Foundation had organized a free medical camp at Jagriti Enclave from April 22 to May 7 to provide assistance to people suffering from COVID-19.

Gambhir has said that the camp remained under the supervision and control of Dr Manish of Garg Hospital. He further said, "A total of 2,628 strips of Fabiflu were purchased from authorized vendors against prescription given by Dr Sanjay Garg of Garg Hospital. Respective invoices were obtained by the Foundation from the vendors for the said purchase."

However, the Drug Controller has on Thursday said Gambhir has been found guilty of unauthorisedly stocking, procuring, and distributing Covid medicines. After having been spelt guilty, Gambhir took to Twitter and quoted Bhagat Singh's saying, "I am a man and all that affects mankind concerns me - Sardar Bhagat Singh."
