Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee is at the critical state and has been getting treated under ventilator support in New Delhi. The development has come a day after he said that he has tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection.
According to the reports close to the development, the former president has undergone surgery on Monday to remove a clot from his brain. The surgery was done at the Army's Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi. The surgery was successful and though he remains in a critical state, his vital parameters are stable and a team of doctors has been observing and monitoring the health condition of the former Commander-in-Chief round the clock.
He was spelled positive for the viral infection hours before the surgery and moved to the hospital based on the advice of the doctors. On Monday afternoon, Pranab Mukherjee has taken to Twitter and said that he has tested positive for the global pandemic and requested those who came in close contact with him to get tested and isolated.
He said, "On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19". Following his tweet, wishes have been pouring in for the former president from the national leaders for his speedy recovery.

Rashtrapati Bhavan said that President Ram Nath Kovind has spoken to Sharmistha, the daughter of his predecessor, and inquired about his health. On Monday, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has visited the Army's Research and Referral Hospital and enquired about the health of the former president. The Defence Minister was at the hospital for about twenty minutes.
Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijeet Mukherjee took to Twitter and said, "I wish my father a speedy recovery. I appeal to all my countrymen to pray for his speedy recovery and good health". Congress party said, "We wish former president Pranab Mukherjee a speedy recovery from Covid".

Pranab Mukherjee was India's 13th President and served the nation's highest office from 2012 to 2017. National leaders like Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Abhishek Singhvi, and Mallikarjun Kharge had wished the former President for his speedy recovery. According to the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 22,68,675 positive cases so far as of Tuesday morning 8 am of which 15,83,489 have been discharged, and 45,257 had died of the viral infection.
In the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning 8 am, India has reported 53,601 fresh cases, 47,746 fresh discharges, and 871 had succumbed to the viral infection.
