Former IAS officer and Tamil Nadu's CEO Naresh Gupta passes away at 72! From the state CM to Governor pay condolences...

Naresh Gupta, a veteran IAS officer and former Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tamil Nadu, passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 72 years old and had been suffering from a chest ailment. He is survived by his wife and a son.

Governor R.N. Ravi took to Twitter on Monday night condoled the death of Mr. Gupta. “Saddened by the demise of veteran IAS officer Thiru Naresh Gupta. He served the people of Tamil Nadu with the utmost diligence and integrity, and will always be remembered as an outstanding administrator. Condolences to his family and friends,”

In his condolence message, chief minister M K Stalin recalled the positions he held in the state government. "I was shocked to hear of his passing," he said. Mr. Gupta, who hailed from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, was an eminent administrator who served the state of Tamil Nadu in various capacities for over three decades.

He was the first Collector of Sivaganga district (1985-86), Secretary to Governor Bhishma Narayan Singh (1991-93), Home Secretary (2001-02) and Member Secretary of the State Planning Commission (2002-05). But he was best known for his role as the CEO of Tamil Nadu, which he held for about eight years in two spells (1998-2000 and 2005-2010).

He oversaw several elections, including the 2006 assembly election and the 2009 general election, with utmost diligence and integrity. He did not hesitate to differ with the ruling party of the day on matters related to electoral conduct and fairness. He once called the 2009 Lok Sabha election as the most challenging one in his career.

After his retirement, he was appointed as a member of the Central Administrative Tribunal. He also authored a book on human development based on his experiences at the Planning Commission. He was a follower of Gandhian philosophy and held postgraduate degrees in Mathematics and Gandhian Thought.
