In a first-of-its-kind incident, the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu has on Friday witnessed three back-to-back tremors in the span of two hours. Though no lives were lost, the natural event has heavily disturbed a community and damaged some houses.
According to National Center for Seismology, the tremors were mild, in a magnitude ranging between 1.2 to 1.5 on the Richter scale. Three minor tremors were felt near Oddanchatram in Dindigul. It has been reported that the first tremor was experienced at 4.33 am on Friday - March 25 with a magnitude recording 1.2 on the Richter scale.
The second tremor was felt at 6.04 am followed by the third one at 6.07 am. Both these tremors had recorded 1.5 magnitude on the Richter scale. As per the data from the national centre, the depth of tremor was ten kilometres. The reports say that as the sequel of the tremors, two homes in Oddanchatram had braced up cracks and the people living in the area had left their homes.
In relief, no major devastation was reported and the local officials had also visited the villages to ascertain the damages caused by the mild tremors. TV channels had shown the visuals from the houses that had experienced cracks. The authorities are in the process of ascertaining the complete scale of damages as the first-of-its-kind event recorded by Dindigul had shocked the entire state.
On the other hand, it must be noted that a much stronger earthquake of 3.5 magnitude on the Richter scale was experienced in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu on December 23, 2021. A day ahead of the tremor in Vellore, a similar scale of tremor has occurred in the Chikkaballapura district of Karnataka.
