In a first-of-its-kind model, Tamil Nadu is all set to introduce an E-ticket system and smart card travel for buses. The state transport department aims to roll out the significant project by the end of this year. Had it come to effect, the passengers can use online payment platforms to scan and pay for their tickets.
Speaking to the reporters on Monday - June 6, Tamil Nadu Transport Minister Sivasankar said, "By the end of this year, the e-ticketing system will be introduced instead of the bus ticketing system. Once the scheme is operational, tickets can be obtained using Google pay and mobile scanning methods.
While the e-ticketing system will be useful for the general public, the transport department will introduce smart cards, which will be useful for students. Sivasankar said, "School students will use the smart card to travel by bus. The tender has been initiated according to this. Soon the work will be completed and all school students will be issued a smart card to travel by bus."
He further affirmed that the students can travel by bus using an old travel card until a smart card is issued to them. Recently, the Transport Minister has said that a contract has been signed with a German company to purchase 2,000 diesel and 500 electric buses to replace the oldest buses in Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation.
