The much-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Indian, starring Kamal Haasan as the vigilante Senapathy, is finally on the cards. The film, titled Indian 2, is being directed by S. Shankar, who also helmed the original. The film will see Kamal Haasan reprise his role as the old freedom fighter who fights against corruption and crimes in the society.
The film also features an ensemble cast of S. J. Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Kalidas Jayaram, Gulshan Grover, Nedumudi Venu, Vivek, Samuthirakani, Bobby Simha, Guru Somasundaram, Delhi Ganesh and others.
But that’s not all. According to the latest buzz, Indian 2 will not be a standalone film but a part of a trilogy. There will be an Indian 3 as well. The reason behind this decision is that the premise of the film is loaded with several sub-plots and warrants two parts to reach the conclusion.
Also, the footage shot so far was too long 6 hours, so naturally the film requires a part 3 to do justice to the story and the characters. Both parts will release in a gap of one year span, and the climax of Part 2 will lead for Part-3.
Shankar and his team have decided to shoot for Indian 2 and Indian 3 simultaneously to save time and money. The shooting of Indian 2 had been halted following an accident on the sets earlier, leading to death of few crew members. Production had been suspended since then owing to numerous factors, including the pandemic, cost overruns and legal disputes, before resuming last year.
Indian 2 is produced by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography done by Ravi Varman and Rathnavelu and editing performed by A. Sreekar Prasad. Indian 2 is expected to release in 2023, while Indian 3 will follow in 2024. The fans are eagerly waiting for this epic saga to unfold on the big screen.
