'Elley Don't Worry, Be Happy' is one of the stress-busting dialogues in the Tamil Cinema and if this dialogue is an art, the artist would be actor Vivek. Thanks to him for presenting a one-line medicine for the misery and thanks to Balachander for finding the doctor and versatile actor in Vivek and presenting him to the Tamil cinema. That doctor is now no more and left the world by leaving his precious journey of life.
Actor Vivek has passed away in the wee hours of Saturday in Chennai at the age of 59 due to cardiac arrest. He was admitted to SIMS Hospital in Chennai on Friday under critical condition. He was treated in the Intensive Care Unit with the support of ECMO. His sudden hospitalization had immensely shocked everyone and several notable people had extended their prayers for his speedy recovery. However, Vivek had breathed his last on Saturday at the age of 59 by leaving behind incessant dusk.
Throughout his career, Vivek hasn't limited himself as an actor but he kept his contribution for sowing a seed of change in society. While he brought a smile on the big screens, he also had injected a social message to the people from education to religion. His contribution to society was boundless in that it touched every soul to inspire a change. Besides conferred with the Padma Shri award for his contribution to the Indian cinema, his relationship with Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was a glittering stone in his career that shined in a way of planting trees under the guidance of the former President. As we mourn for the demise of our Chinna Kalaivaanar, let's take a look at some of his everlasting and award-winning comedies,
Palayathu Amman (2000): Who would forget the hilarious interview of Vivek and Mayilsamy? It's been two decades now and it still revolves around the mind, take a second and imagine Vivek's contribution. It was a period where spiritual movies have seen a rise in the Tamil cinema and in this movie, Vivek played a farmer-cum-godman and in this interview at a TV channel with another godman (played by Mayilsamy), he acted in a way that he thought how the interview and debates would happen now.
Minnale (2001): Vivek was Madhavan's ambassador of love in this movie. He played the role of Chokku, Madhavan's best friend. We can say that this would be one of the movies where the comedian wore coolers along with the hero. The movie has marked the directorial debut of Gautham Vasudev Menon and also marked Harris Jayaraj's debut as a music composer. The movie also stars Abbas, Reema Sen, and Nagesh in important roles.
Run (2002): Being one of the breakthrough movies for Vivek, he has won three best comedian awards for his acting in the movie in which Madhavan starred in a lead role. The awards include Filmfare Best Comedian Award, Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian, and ITFA Best Comedian Award. In Run, Vivek played the role of Mohan, a young man who shifts to the city and is eventually tasked to find his friend by losing the latter's address. His dialogues with his father 'Saathappan' Nandhakumar would still steal our eyes. Through his appearance and delivery of humorous and hilarious dialogues, Vivek had shown that he is a valuable asset to the Tamil Cinema.
Saamy (2003): Do you remember the question 'Which law do you like?' and traffic police who lost his hand? That's Venkataraman from Saamy for you. His daring projection to take on the caste practices and disparities being an orthodox Brahmin had won the hearts and become one of his everlasting comedies, and of course, his act of social reformation. For his brilliant acting in Saamy, he was conferred with the Filmfare Best Comedian Award and ITFA Best Comedian Award.
Parthiban Kanavu (2003): Vivek has played the character of Mano, the husband of Devadarshini. Vivek's drama for hunting jobs and roaming with friends by lying to his wife was still and will ever be a watchable comedy of the actor. The movie starred Srikanth and Sneha in the lead roles and Shanthi Williams, Manivannan, Vivek, Mohan Sharma, and Devadarshini in important roles. He won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian for this movie.
Perazhagan (2004): 'Sneha, Sneha... Intha varthailathanya naa vilunthuten' (Sneha, Sneha...I fall to this word) was one of the comedy dialogues of Vivek in the movie. He played the role of Marriage Assembler Kuzhandaisaamy and the scenes of searching alliance for Chinna (Suriya), a village youth with a hunchback, were laughter to the core. It is another movie that has to be in the store of Vivek's successful movies. Perazhagan was starred by Suriya and Jytothika in the lead roles and Vivek has received Filmfare Best Comedian Award for this movie.
Anniyan (2005): 'Ivalo appaviya irukiyeda Ambi' (You are too innocent Ambi), was one of the famous dialogues of Vivek, who played the role of Chaari, a Sub-Inspector of Police. Directed by Shankar, the movie had Vikram in the lead role and it would be the movie spoke about multiple personality disorder where Vikram would take three different characters inside him. Vivek was the face that brought a smile in this psychological action thriller. For his splendid acting in Anniyan, he was conferred with the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian.
Sivaji (2006): 'Nee thirumba Americavuke Poidu Sivaji' (You go back to America, Sivaji), was one of the everlasting dialogues of Vivek, which he says to Rajini in a fashion that he can't tolerate the corruption here. Vivek has acted as Rajini's uncle and it was one of his remarkable movies in his career with Superstar Rajinikanth. He was equally traveled with the hero throughout the movie and delivered justice to the role for which he received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian.
Velailla Pattadhari (2014): 'Enna Oru carry bagla kudierunkenga?' (Why are you residing in a carry bag?) was his dialogue which better remembers the movie. His role as Azhagusundaram, Dhanush's elder co-worker, was full of disappointments that end in a way that Thangapusham, Vivek's wife, never made a sweet. It was one of the movies where Vivek proved age doesn't matter to make people smile. His role was indeed turned out to be a supporting one to the actor who dares and fights to live up to his aim. VIP is directed by Velraj and besides Dhanush and Vivek, the movie stars Amala Paul, Samuthirakani, Saranya Ponvannan, and Surbhi in the important roles.
In Vivek, the Indian Cinema and the society had seen a daring soul and charming face which used smile and love as the weapon to defeat the problems and obstacles. In a career spanning three decades, he never disappointed the people and never failed to inspire and motivate the younger generation. He kept campaigning for good and change and in 2009, Vivek was conferred with the Padma Shri Award, India's fourth-highest civilian honor, for his contribution to the Indian Cinema. But it's undeniable that he is a true Bharat Ratna for the Indian Cinema and society. He has left us with his one-line medicine - 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'.
