Exactly a day ahead of the complete lockdown, the state-owned TASMAC outlets in Tamil Nadu had witnessed the rain of money as thousands of tipplers had gathered before the outlets to buy alcohol as the shops will be closed on Sunday. The state government has imposed the full lockdown on Sunday in its bid to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown has only kept the emergency and essential services active while closing all other establishments including malls, shopping centers, and TASMAC liquor outlets.
In the wake of the complete lockdown, the tipplers across the state had thronged before the TASMAC outlets on Saturday to buy and store the alcohol. The visuals from the outlets had shown that the boozers had taken a break from the COVID-19 guidelines to ensure that they won't take a break from alcohol on Sunday. Due to the large crowd, there was a rain of money on the TASMAC outlets as they had recorded the revenue of an unprecedented fashion in recent times and the revenue has become the highest in this year so far.
According to reports, the TASMAC outlets in Tamil Nadu had sold the liquor worth Rs 252 crore on Saturday alone, which has become one of the highest revenue breakthroughs of the state-owned monopolistic liquor supplier, which generates the highest revenue to the state government's coffers. The shops in Chennai Zone had recorded the highest revenue on Saturday by selling the liquor worth Rs 58.37 crore.
Following Chennai, Madurai Zone was in second place with Rs 49.43 crore, followed by Trichy Zone with Rs 48.57 crore, Coimbatore Zone with Rs 48.32 crore, and Salem Zone with Rs 47.79 crore. Such a high scale of revenue would typically happen in the TASMAC outlets during the time of festivals and holidays and this Himalayan revenue was due to the complete lockdown on Sunday.
The visuals from the liquor outlets had shown that the tipplers had rubbed each other's shoulders in a rush to buy alcohol and some areas had warranted the presence of police personnel to manage the crowd. Chennai has gone deserted on Sunday as the lockdown has come back and the eerie emptiness in the city had reminded the memories of the last year's lockdown. According to reports, around 80,000 police personnel have been deputed on the duty of enforcing the lockdown of which around 7,000 officials are stationed in Chennai.
The police had installed checkpoints across Chennai and monitoring the movements of vehicles. The law enforcement agency had also warned the people to invite penalty if they are found to be violating the guidelines and exiting their residences for flimsy reasons. The police had also warned that the vehicle would be seized for making unnecessary movements. If people are going for emergency purposes like hospital emergencies, marriages, and deaths, they have to show adequate evidence.
The hotels and other forms of eateries are also directed to function only to offer parcel services. They can offer parcel services from 6 am - 10 am; 12 pm - 3 pm; 6 pm - 9 pm. The food delivering platforms like Swiggy and Zomato are permitted to function in this time scale. On Saturday, the state government has announced that theaters, beauty parlors, salons, spas, and barbershops will be closed in the state from April 26 while the hotels, restaurants, and tea shops are allowed to offer parcel services.
