Driving with 'G' stickers in vehicles in Chennai will put you in new trouble: Here's why!

With the view of annulling the illegitimate usage of 'G' (Government) stickers in Chennai, the city police had launched the drive to take action against the people who are using these stickers without authorization. The police had begun a crackdown against such vehicles after the city had reported a large-scale usage of the G stickers.

The police had found that a large number of drivers have been misusing the 'G' stickers and they have been advised to remove such stickers from the number plates of their vehicles. The crackdown to annul such practice is currently being done in some of the important areas of the city including ECR, T Nagar, Adyar, Triplicane, Kodambakkam, Mylapore, Tambaram, Taramani, and St Thomas Mount.

According to reports, the police had said that many government employees use their own vehicles as they are not authorized to use the government vehicles and while using their own vehicles, they put up the name of their department and use 'G' stickers on the number plates under the guise that they are government employees. However, such an act is an offence as these stickers only have to be pasted in the government vehicles, not on the private vehicles of the employees.

Such illegal acts are being done by some of the employees with the motive of evading police checks, defying traffic rules, and avoiding paying toll fees. According to the rules, government officials aren't authorized to put 'G' on the number plates of their own vehicles even if they are using it for official purposes. Speaking to a news agency, an Additional Commissioner of Police in Chennai said that the police began the crackdown following several complaints of misuse of vehicles.

He said that the number plate will be issued with a 'G' letter if the vehicle is registered by the government. However, private vehicles aren't allowed to use the letter 'G' in the number plates, instead, they can put up a text 'vehicle on government duty' on the front of the vehicle if the government employees are using their private vehicles for official purposes. The reports say that the misuse of 'G' stickers would attract cheating charges and the people can be booked under the charges of cheating and their vehicles can be seized if found to have misused the government sticker.
