The state of Tamil Nadu is under series accusations by the journalists in the wake of an unofficial ban that has been observed by the state government in blocking the reporters with the black outfits at the government events.
The issue has come to the spotlight after several journalists in the state have reported that they have been banned in attending Central government events for wearing black attire. On Sunday, a Chennai based journalist has revealed that she was allegedly banned to enter the National Institute of Ocean Technology in Chennai where India's Vice President Venkaiah Naidu was addressing, by citing that she was dressed in black.
The reports say that many journalists have encountered similar bans and bigotry for being dressed in black colored clothing at official events- mainly in the events participated by Central government guests and dignitaries and in the state's Chief Secretariat. However, the police department hasn't addressed the issue yet and the sources of the state government have indicated that the state has issued unofficial directives to the people not to dress in black attire while taking part in state's important events by claiming that the black color is connected with black shirt protests in the state that were mainly organized by the state's opposition party DMK. The black shirt protests intensified from last year April when the city of Chennai and parts of the state had voiced against Prime minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state by wearing black shirts. DMK party led the protests in the state which seen flying black balloons and holding placards which urged Modi to go back after the Central government had delayed in constituting the Cauvery Management Board.
Most of the journalists had come through such biased treatments when Narendra Modi hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping last month in Tamil Nadu's coastal town of Mamallapuram for their second informal summit and in the continuity, journalists have claimed that their respective news crew was literally subjected to go through multiple rounds of checks at the airport on Sunday to cover the arrival of Vice President. They further stated that the airport security authorities have located one member of the crew with black attire following which they allegedly forced to undergo multiple checks.
A Senior government authority of the state's information and public relations department has admitted that the unofficial orders have been passed by the state government with the view of preventing the possibilities of security lag and major threat.
