ADMK MLA Pollachi Jayaraman, who was the former Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, has faced a slipper attack from a DMK worker after an event had turned into chaos. As the incident has drawn huge attention, ADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami has staunchly condemned the attack and urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to initiate action against the DMK cadres.
According to reports, the incident had happened on Tuesday in Kinathukadavu in the Coimbatore district. ADMK has organized an event to celebrate the revival of Kothavadi lake in the area as it was filled in the wake of recent heavy rainfall after two decades. Pollachi Jayaraman, the sitting ADMK MLA of Pollachi and several ADMK cadres had gathered at the event near the lake. A canopy was installed to host the event and the cadres had planned to prepare sweet as the lake has received water after two decades.
The Parambikulam- Aliyar Project (PAP) was the main water source for the Kothavadi lake and the waterbed has turned to be an arid land for several years due to lack of water. Following the heavy rain in the past two months, water was released to the lake from the PAP canal last month. To celebrate the event, the ADMK functionaries had planned to offer floral tribute to the water that has been stored in the lake.
When the ADMK cadres were carrying out the celebrations, a group of DMK functionaries had turned up at the lake and they said that the ruling DMK government should be credited for releasing water to the lake from the PAP canal. The DMK cadres had also raised slogans against Pollachi Jayaraman by accusing the latter of not taking any steps to bring water to the lake from the PAP canal during the previous ADMK regime. The cadres of the ruling party had urged the ADMK MLA to leave the place.
The event had soon got into an altercation after ADMK cadres indulged in a melee with the rivals. In light of a dispute, Pollachi Jayaraman has decided to leave the place and when he was returning to his car, one of the DMK cadres had hurled a slipper at him. However, he had escaped the attack and the slipper had hit one of the ADMK cadres on his eyes. Following the incident, the ADMK cadres had started raising slogans against the DMK, warranting police intervention.
The police officials from the Kinathukadavu police department had intervened and escorted Jayaraman to his car and sent him safely from the location. The police had removed the canopy and directed to dissolve the gathering. After hearing the news of a slipper attack against the ADMK MLA, the party's leader Edappadi Palaniswami had condemned the event. He said, "During our regime, we had allocated Rs 25 lakh to desilt the lake, which overflowed on Monday. Pollachi Jayaraman had visited the lake to attend the event and DMK cadres had assaulted him while the police had remained silent."
"I condemn the atrocities of the ruling party cadres against Pollachi Jayaraman and other cadres of the party", Palaniswami added. He further demanded Chief Minister MK Stalin to take action against the DMK cadres and deputy superintendent of police. On the other hand, the police department had booked a case against Pollachi Jayaraman under the grounds of violating the Covid-19 protocols and conducting the event. Besides Jayaraman, the police had filed a case against 24 people under five sections.
