DMK is ready to support ADMK: Will the unity of rivals fulfill the demand?

DMK President and Tamil Nadu Opposition Leader MK Stalin has, on Wednesday, said that the party is ready to support the ruling ADMK government in protest and demand to get approval for the 7.5% NEET quota bill from the Governor that gives reservation for the government school students who cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in medical admissions.

Stalin had appealed to Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami to come forward and announce a protest to demand the Governor to give his approval for the bill that has been lying before him for over a month. The Tamil Nadu Assembly had unanimously passed the bill with the support of all the parties on September 15 and sent it to the Governor for his consent.

Taking to Twitter, Stalin has, on Wednesday, said that the DMK is ready to protest with the ADMK government and asked the Chief Minister to come forward and announce the protest after discussing with all the parties. The DMK President said that he had written to Governor Banwarilal Purohit urging him to give consent for the bill and he also had attached the letter.

In his letter to the Governor, MK Stalin said, "On behalf of DMK, the primary opposition party which supported the bill, I urge you to immediately give assent to the bill and help the fulfillment of the dream of government school students to an extent to pursue medicine as their profession". Stalin's support for ruling ADMK has come a day after a delegation of five senior ministers met the Governor requesting him to give a swift consent to the bill.

On Tuesday, five senior ministers KA Sengottaiyan, D Jayakumar, C Vijaybaskar, KP Anbalagan, and CV Shanmugam had met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and requested him to give his swift consent to the bill. While addressing the reporters after the meeting, senior minister Jayakumar said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has passed the bill in the assembly for the benefit of the government school students. When the 7.5% quota is implemented, many government school students will get admission under NEET. This is the land for social justice and the bill will help the students who belong to rural backgrounds.

Jayakumar further stated that the delegation has requested the Governor to provide his consent to the bill and the minister added that the Governor had accepted the request and said he will announce a good decision. The activists and educationalists have been demanding the Governor to pass the bill as it has now drawn major attention as the NEET results were declared last week following which the students from the government schools are hoping to get placed in some of the top medical institutions.

Earlier, Stalin urged the Governor to provide his approval to the bill and also had accused the ruling government of failing to put pressure on the Governor to get his consent. The DMK President said that the 7.5% reservation bill was passed unanimously by the assembly and it would bring equality between government and private school students. In his letter, he further pressed that the government school students could benefit from the reservation in this academic year only if the Governor gives his approval to the bill.
