DMK MLA KP Shankar of Thiruvottiyur has invited fresh trouble as the Greater Chennai Corporation has filed a complaint on Friday against him for allegedly manhandling the corporation engineer. The complaint has come a day after the legislator was expelled from the party post by the DMK leadership.
Shankar had been serving as the DMK's Secretary of the Thiruvottiyur West district. After the incident of attacking the engineer came to the light of the leadership, he was removed from the post of secretary. It has been reported that Shankar and his associates had beaten the assistant engineer of the Greater Chennai Corporation in a dispute over laying down the road.
The legislator and his aides had stopped the road laying work carried by the corporation in the Natarajan garden of Thiruvottiyur on Wednesday night. The civic body has allotted a tender for Rs 3 crore in the Thiruvottiyur zone to a contractor 'Road Links Infrastructure' for laying roads and the works to lay the roads were taking place on Natarajan Garden first, second, and third streets on Wednesday.
The reports say that on Wednesday night, DMK MLA KP Shankar and his associates had arrived at the place and demanded the authorities to stop the road laying work. After seeing an impasse from the legislator, the assistant engineer had intervened to solve the issue. However, the MLA's and aides had beaten the assistant engineer. The engineer had informed about the incident to his higher officials and he was then asked to leave the spot.
The incident had shocked the authorities and after Shankar's conduct went to the notice of the party's leadership, the legislator was removed from the party's post. In a statement, DMK General Secretary Duraimurugan said, "Thiruvottiyur MLA KP Shankar is relieved from Thiruvottiyur West Party secretary post due to his activities against the conduct of the party." On the other hand, the assistant engineer has said that the MLA has called him and apologized for the incident.
The Corporation has said that it would post the engineer at the head office for his safety. The opposition parties had also voiced against the attack and demanded action against the MLA. ADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss had condemned the incident and urged the police to take action against the MLA and his associates for beating the engineer and disrupting his work.
