The DMK leadership has on Thursday - January 27 issued an official statement in which it has said that a party MLA has been ousted from the party post after the legislator was accused of manhandling an assistant engineer in his constituency. The statement was issued by DMK's General Secretary Duraimurugan and the expulsion has come in spite of the legislator expressing his apology to the engineer.
According to reports, DMK MLA KP Shankar from the Thiruvottiyur constituency and he had been serving as the DMK's Secretary of the Thiruvottiyur West district. After the incident of attacking the engineer came to the light of the leadership, he was removed from the post of secretary. It has been reported that Shankar and his associates had beaten the assistant engineer of the Greater Chennai Corporation in a tender dispute.
The legislator and his aides had stopped the road laying work carried by the corporation in the Natarajan garden of Thiruvottiyur on Wednesday night. The civic body has allotted a tender for Rs 3 crore in the Thiruvottiyur zone to a contractor 'Road Links Infrastructure' for laying roads and the works to lay the roads were taking place on Natarajan Garden first, second, and third streets on Wednesday.
The reports say that on Wednesday night, DMK MLA KP Shankar and his associates had arrived at the place and demanded the authorities to stop the road laying work. After seeing an impasse from the legislator, the assistant engineer had intervened to solve the issue. However, the MLA's and aides had beaten the assistant engineer. The engineer had informed about the incident to his higher officials and he was then asked to leave the spot.
The incident had shocked the authorities and after Shankar's conduct went to the notice of the party's leadership, the legislator is now been removed from the party's post. In a statement, DMK General Secretary Duraimurugan said, "Thiruvottiyur MLA KP Shankar is relieved from Thiruvottiyur West Party secretary post due to his activities against the conduct of the party." On the other hand, the assistant engineer has said that the MLA has called him and apologized for the incident.
