The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been building its empire of assets stronger every year than any other party in the country. The scale of assets of the BJP reveals that other parties are not even close to it when it comes to asset value. The recent report has displayed the obvious that the BJP has been amassing its assets to the height that no party in independent India has reached. It has become a strong indicator that the BJP is peaking towards becoming the single largest party, despite a miraging political base in certain states.
Amid the upcoming crucial assembly polls, a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) that was released on Friday has unveiled the financial state of the political parties in India. The report was based on the assets declared by the parties and though BJP has more assets than any other party, what has spurred a surprise is the percentile of assets that it enjoys. The Central ruling party has declared assets of Rs 4,847.78 crore, which is almost 70% of the total assets declared to the Election Commission of India by the seven national parties in 2019-2020.
The surge in assets of the BJP has come amid the Covid-19 pandemic and the declaration has been made after a huge victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The total assets declared by the parties stand at Rs 6,988.57 crore of which BJP has a contribution of nearly 70%. Following the BJP, Bahujan Samaj Party comes second with the asset declaration of Rs 698.33 crore, the Congress Party with Rs 588.16 crore, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with Rs 569.19 crore, All-India Trinamool Congress -Rs 247.78 crore, the Communist Party of India - Rs 29.78 crore, and the Nationalist Congress Party - Rs 8.20 crore.
The national parties have also declared total liabilities of Rs 74.27 crore of which Congress has accounted for Rs 49.55 crore. On the front of regional parties, the ADR report says that 44 regional parties had declared assets worth Rs 2,129.38 crore. Uttar Pradesh's Samajwadi Party tops the table with the asset value of Rs 563.47 crore followed by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi with Rs 301.47 crore and the ADMK with Rs 267.61 crore.
Among the top ten, the Shiv Sena party has declared assets worth Rs 185.90 crore while the Tamil Nadu ruling DMK has declared assets Rs 184.24 crore, and the Janata Dal (United) has Rs 45 crore. The report said, "National and Regional parties had failed to adhere to the ICAI guidelines that direct parties to declare details of the financial institutions, banks or agencies from whom loans were taken. The guidelines specify that the parties should state the terms of repayment of term loans on basis of the due date such as a year, 1-5 years or payable after five years."
