It's a historical day for the world of cinema as what remained an elusive project for several decades has finally been accomplished. Ponniyin Selvan, the dream project of several legends, has now arrived in the theatres from the minds of acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who has successfully brought the cohort of top stars on the single screen. Thanks to his efforts and to the cast and crew for making the impossible possible.
Ponniyin Selvan, the historic adaption of Kalki's novel of the same name, revolves around the Chola era. It comes in two parts and the first part of the movie is released on Friday- September 30 in a grand and classy opening. As the decades of wait by the generations have come to an end, hundreds and thousands of people across and beyond the borders are thronging the theatres to travel into the Chola world through a new medium.
The spectacular making of a historical novel added with an ensemble cast and crew sparked a wave of euphoria, that was apparently evident from the celebrations. It is indeed a treat for readers and fans alike and besides fans, several actors and celebrities are wishing the team success and expressing their thirst to watch the movie. The visuals have shown that Ponniyin Selvan has received a massive reception from all ages and soils.
According to reports, Ponniyin Selvan is doing well at the box office after a strong debut in the United States and it has grossed impressive numbers across several locations. The mood was similar in several countries and there was nothing short of a grand celebration in Chennai and across various Indian cities. Actor Karthi, who played a crucial role in the movie, took to Twitter and wrote, "A Never before cinematic experience. Absolutely stunning presentation by Mani Ratnam sir, A R Rahman sir, Ravi Varman sir, Sreekar Prasad sir, Tharani sir, and the sound department. Honoured to be a part of this magnum opus Lyca Productions. Our pride Ponniyin Selvan."
Actor Sivakarthikeyan took to Twitter on Thursday and wrote, "Waiting to watch the Great Kalki's #PonniyinSelvan1 in our legend Mani Ratnam sir's magic. Best wishes to the entire team. May this be the humongous hit of Indian cinema." Actor Arun Vijay tweeted, "Wishing our pride Mani sir, A R Rahman sir, Vikram sir, Jayam Ravi brother and Karthi brother and all the other cast and crew a spellbinding success on creating and being part of our magnum opus #PS1. Let's watch it in theatres and celebrate."
As per the reviews from Tweeple, it seems like Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai) and Kundhavai (Trisha) duo screen presence is a highlight along with Karthi's splendid performance. A popular film critic wrote, "The face-off between #Kundavai & #Nandini is a crucial moment in #PonniyinSelvan1 What an ego clash scene, you can feel the simmering tension between them. Both actors lived the role, bejewelled & dressed to perfection."
Another buff praised A R Rahman's music score as a scintillating work and he wrote, "#PS1 #PonniyinSelvan: The master AR Rahman does it again for his man - scintillating work with the score that is easily the first hero of the film. Chants, hums, love themes, elevations so be it, @arrahman totally nails it. Stuff of legends!". "Damn! He's really done it. #ManiRatnam's #PonniyinSelvan1 is a spectacular adaptation that superbly captures the intrigue, thrills and page-turning quality of #Kalki's books. The start is shaky, but the entire second half is the master showing us all that he's still the boss", another fan wrote.
Another cinephile wrote, "Thoroughly entertaining and faithful adaptation. It's a brilliantly sequenced film with no dull and loose moments. Loved Karthi and Jayam Ravi. I think no one other than Mani Ratnam could have done justice to all the hype Kalki makes about Nandhini Devi." A user wrote, "A must watch in theatres, don't expect over-the-top action sequences like in Bahubali, this one here is a classic Mani Ratnam Gem. A solid screenplay with a great performance from the cast. Worth your time and money."
The production of Ponniyin Selvan started in December 2019 and ended in September 2021. The budget of this magnum opus is a whopping Rs 500 crores. Ponniyin Selvan is bankrolled by Subaskaran's Lyca Productions and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies. It has been expected that the second part will hit the screens during the summer of 2023. From Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, Sarathkumar to Parthiban, the movie has a galaxy of stars playing important roles.
