With the view of demanding justice for Fathima Latheef, the student of IIT Madras who committed suicide on November 9th, 2019 in the premises of institute, two students of the prestigious institution have camped their indefinite hunger strike at the premises.
The students identified as Azhar Moideen and Justin Joseph have been recent ones to enhance the voices of demanding justice for Fathima Latheef through the hunger strike where they had urged to end the suicides of students in the campus and their main demand is to conduct an external expert survey into the important issues the students have been facing to ascertain the mental health of the students.
Through their demand, they had called a fair, independent, timely and transparent investigation to expose the mystery behind the death of Fathima Latheef. By citing her suicide note, these two students had stated that she had gone through harassment from the professors. While urging the institute to implement the resolutions which were adopted in the Student Council meeting last semester, they called the management to install the committee which will act for the complaints and grievances of the students.
The duo based with Chinta Bar, an independent student body of certified by the institute, had levied threatening messages to the management that the student body would be staging a protest if the demands failed to meet by the institute.
On November 9th, Fathima Latheef, a native of Kerala who was pursuing her first-year postgraduate course in Humanities and Social Services had allegedly committed suicide in the premises of the institute and while it was initially told that she could have hanged herself by citing low marks in the examinations, her suicide note that was in her mobile phone had revealed that she could have been harassed by her department and by the professors which have now ignited huge protests to demand action against the professors whom she had referred in her suicide note.
