After taking the probe into the car cylinder blast in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, the NIA (National Investigation Agency) filed the first FIR on Thursday - October 27 in the midst of the nationwide attention that was sparked by the incident that occurred last Sunday. In what has been termed an act of terror, the blast killed one person- named Jameesha Mubin, who was suspected to be a suicide bomber.
The blast occurred in Ukkadam, Coimbatore in the wee hours of Sunday close to a temple on the occasion of Diwali. The Tamil Nadu police immediately took over the case and conducted raids on the residence of Mubin. The officials have confiscated the materials that were used to make country bombs. So far, the Coimbatore police have arrested six people of which five people are facing charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, (UAPA), which is an anti-terror law.
The police recovered the footage from Mubin's residence which showed that the arrested five people were carrying a gunny bag ahead of the explosion. When further investigation was underway, the incident triggered a public outcry against the state government after which, Chief Minister MK Stalin held a high-level meeting recently, and following the meeting, MK Stalin recommended an NIA probe into the incident as it was an act of terror.
Based on the recommendation, the Union government handed over the probe to NIA on October 27, and on the same day, the Central agency has registered an FIR in the incident. According to reports, the FIR was filed under Section 174 of CrPC - police to enquire and report on death caused by unnatural circumstances and Section 3(a) of Explosive Substances Act, 1908 - punishment for causing an explosion likely to endanger life or property.
The FIR said that, "The Central government is of the opinion that Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 has been committed and having regards to the gravity of the offense and the national and international ramifications, it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency." It has been reported that the FIR contains the findings obtained from the investigations that were conducted so far and information about the complainant, who was identified as Sundaresan, the priest of the temple close to which the blast occurred.
