Cyclone Nivar has been getting intensified into an extreme cyclonic storm as it has been fast approaching the states of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The cyclone will be making landfall on Wednesday evening between Karaikal and Mamallapuram with the wind speed ranging between 120-130 kmph and the wind may gust up to 145 kmph.
The Tamil Nadu state government has initiated the relief efforts and alerted all the district administrations to take precautionary measures and rescue operations to rescue and evacuate the affected people from the coastal areas. It has been expected that the cyclone would be bringing very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts including Chennai, pushing the government to suspend public transports in some of the districts and to declare a public holiday in the state.
Speaking to the reporters on Wednesday afternoon about the state of the cyclone and the impact of the storm, Balachandran, the director of the Regional Meteorological Center, Chennai, said that the cyclone is centered at 214 kms from Chennai and at 110 kms from Cuddalore. The wind speed would be at 155 kmph when the cyclone makes landfall. Nivar will be making landfall near Puducherry.
During the landfall, the districts of Vellore, Ranipettai, Thiruvannamalai, Thirupathur will be receiving extremely heavy rainfall and the coastal districts will also be receiving heavy rainfall with heavy wind speed at the range between 75 to 80 kmph. Addressing the reporters about the impact of the cyclone, Balachandran said that heavy rainfall and wind speed would devastate the electricity and communication lines, it will also damage the agricultural farms.
The director had appealed to the people not to exit the residences and he further revealed that the impact of the cyclone would be severe and the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu would be facing the adverse impact of the cyclone for six hours after landfall. Cyclone Nivar will get weakened after six hours after landfall and the coastal districts will be facing more challenges in tackling the cyclone and carrying out the relief efforts.
On Wednesday, the coastal districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been issued a Red alert warning ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Nivar. The state government has ordered to release the excess water from Chembarambakkam lake after the lake had reached its full storage capacity due to heavy rainfall in Chennai. The city was issued with a flood warning and the government has initiated relief efforts of evacuating people living on the banks of the Adyar river. The government has advised the residents of Chennai and other coastal districts to stay vigilant and stay indoors. Around 3000 cusecs of water have been released from the Chembarambakkam lake and the government has begun the evacuation process of evacuating people from the banks of the Adyar river.
As the cyclone has formed the extreme cyclonic storm, Chennai Corporation and the city police department have been deploying relief measures to address the emergencies and assistance. The Chennai police had issued a helpline number to the residents to reach in case of reporting any emergency and grievances. The residents are asked to contact '9498181239' through a phone call, message, or WhatsApp.
The Chennai police had closed the important roads of the city and asked the people to stay at their residences. The outskirts of Chennai including Guduvanchery, Urapakkam, Mudichur, Perungalathur, Varadharajapuram, Thirumudivakkam, Adhanur, West Tambaram, Mannivakkam, Manimangalam, and Anagapudhur have been issued with a flood warning. The Chennai Corporation has arranged 169 relief centers across the city to accommodate the evacuated people and relief works.
