The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 1,927 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) through which the state's tally had crossed 36,000 by reporting 36,841 cases so far in its territory including active, discharged, and deceased patients.
Through the unprecedented reporting of 1,927, the state has recorded its new tally of the highest single-day rise since the outbreak by transcending the previous tally of 1,685 cases that were reported on Tuesday. Amid the sharpest rise of cases, the current reporting is the biggest jump as the state was just left with 70 cases to hit 2,000. The state has reported over 1,500 cases for the fourth consecutive day.
The state health department has put out the official press release concerning the outbreak in the state and according to the press release, Tamil Nadu has tested 6,38,846 samples so far including 17,675 that were tested on Wednesday of which 1,927 returned positive for the virus. These 1,927 cases include 30 people who returned to the state from other regions.

The release stated that eight people came from Maharashtra, four each from Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, three from Andhra Pradesh, two from Kuwait, and one each from Saudi Arabia, Maldives, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. These 1,927 cases include 1,162 males and 765 female patients.
Of these 1,927 cases, 1,392 belong to Chennai, 182 from Chengalpattu, 105 from Thiruvallur, 33 from Kancheepuram, 26 from Thiruvannamalai, 25 belong to Ranipet, 24 from Thoothukudi, 14 belong to Thiruvarur, 12 belong to Trichy, eleven belong to Vellore. Ten each from Kanyakumari and Madurai and nine belong to Theni.
Eight from Ramanathapuram and seven each from Cuddalore, Tirunelveli, and Villupuram and five each from Pudukottai and Virudhunagar, four each from Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi, Nagapattinam, and Namakkal and three from Dindigul, two each from Salem, Sivagangai, and Thanjavur and one each from Coimbatore, Erode, and Krishnagiri.
The state has reported 1,008 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 19,333 which is higher than the active COVID-19 cases in the state. The state has also recorded 19 fatalities through which the death toll currently stands at 326. According to the press release, of these 19, 16 belonged to Chennai while the rest three were from Chengalpattu and 15 deceased had been identified with co-morbid conditions.
Chennai has been witnessing an exponential rise of cases for the past few days amid the lockdown and containment strategies. On Wednesday, it has reported 1,390 cases - the highest single-day spike of the city, through which it nears to hit the tally of 26,000 by reporting 25,937 cases which are about 70% of the total cases reported by the state.
As of Wednesday evening, the state has reported 36,841 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra, of which 17,179 are active - including isolation, 19,333 have been discharged, and 326 had succumbed to the virus.
