The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 2,516 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) through which the state's tally has gone beyond 64,000 by reporting 64,603 cases so far in its territory including active, recovered, and deceased patients.
Through the current reporting, the state has reported more than 2,500 cases for the third consecutive day. According to the press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 9,44,352 samples so far including 25,148 that were tested on Tuesday of which 2,516 cases confirmed to have contracted to the virus.

These 2,516 cases include 38 people who returned from other regions (ten from Karnataka, five from Kerala, four each from UAE, Russia, and Maharashtra, three from Telangana, two each from Delhi and West Bengal, and one each from Congo, Maldives, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh). Of these 2,516 cases, 1,557 are males and the rest 959 are female patients.

Out of 2,516 cases, Chennai and its three adjacent districts of Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur have accounted for major share in the current reporting. According to the press release, 1,380 cases belong to Chennai, 156 cases belong to Thiruvallur, 146 cases belong to Chengalpattu, and 59 cases belong to Kancheepuram.
The state has reported 1,227 fresh discharges taking the tally of total discharges to 35,339. The state has also recorded 38 deaths through which the state's death toll currently stands at 833. The press release stated that 22 deaths out of 38 belong to Chennai, four belong to Chengalpattu, two each from Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore, and Trichy and one each from Madurai, Tirunelveli, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, and Salem.
Of these 38 deaths, 36 were identified with co-morbid conditions including diabetes and hypertension as these conditions play a major role in the death caused by the pandemic. With the current reporting of 1,380 cases, Chennai has recorded 44,205 cases so far amid the complete lockdown. As of Tuesday evening, the state has reported 64,603 positive cases so far of which 28,428 are active - including isolation, 35,339 have been discharged, and 833 had succumbed to the virus.
According to the Union Health Ministry, Tamil Nadu is the third Indian state to have the most number of COVID-19 cases after Maharashtra and Delhi which have reported 135796 and 62655 cases respectively. Along with Chennai and its neighboring districts, Madurai would be going under the complete lockdown from June 24 to June 30 in the wake of the sharpest rises in COVID-19 cases.
