The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 1,875 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Thursday through which the state's tally has gone beyond 38,000 by reporting 38,716 so far including active, discharged, and deceased patients. Along with reporting one of the highest single-day rises, the state has also recorded 23 deaths- the highest single-day spike since the outbreak.
According to the press release issued by the state health department on Thursday, Tamil Nadu has tested 6,55,675 samples so far including 16,829 that were tested on Thursday of which 1,875 returned positive and the state has reported over 1,500 cases for the fifth consecutive day. These 1,875 cases include 38 people who returned to the state from other regions.
The press release stated 12 people returned from West Bengal, six came from Maharashtra, five from Kuwait, three from UAE, two each from Saudi Arabia, Maldives, Andaman Islands, and Kerala and one each from Haryana, Delhi, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. The current reporting includes 1,153 males and 722 female patients.

Of these 1,875 cases, 1,407 belong to Chennai, 127 belong to Chengalpattu, 72 belong to Thiruvallur, 26 belong to Ranipet, 20 each from Thiruvannamalai and Madurai, 19 each from Cuddalore and Kancheepuram, 16 each from Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur, 12 belong to Vellore, eleven belong to Dindigul, ten each from Ramanathapuram, Salem, and Trichy.
Eight belong to Thanjavur, seven each from Sivagangai and Villupuram, six belong to Thoothukudi, five belong to Tenkasi, four each from Kallakurichi and Thirupathur, three each from Ariyalur, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Theni, and Tirunelveli. Two each from Perambalur, Pudukottai, and Virudhunagar and one each from Dharmapuri and Namakkal. Apart from the district-wise abstract, 16 people are kept under airport surveillance.
The state has reported 1,372 discharges and the number is one of the highest recorded by the state taking the total number of discharges to 20,705. The state has also recorded 23 fatalities, the highest single-day rise since the outbreak, through which the death toll currently stands at 349. According to the press release, 21 have died at the government hospitals while the rest two succumbed to the infection at the private hospitals.
Of these 23 deaths, 19 belong to Chennai and in the rest four, two belong to Chengalpattu and one each from Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur. About 20 deaths of these 23 had co-morbid conditions like diabetes and hypertension as these are one of the larger factors for the deaths caused by the pandemic. 13 deceased are above 60 years and the remaining ten are from 40 to 60 and of these 23, 17 are males.
With the current reporting of 1,407 cases, Chennai has recorded 27,398 cases so far of which 13,310 are active, 13,808 have been discharged and 279 died due to the infection and Chennai has been recording an exponential rise of the cases by contributing two-thirds to the state's total tally. As of Thursday evening, the state has reported 38,716 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra, of which 17,659 are active - including isolation, 20,705 have been discharged, and 349 had succumbed to the virus.
