The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 874 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Friday through which the state has crossed the tally of 20,000 by reporting 20,246 positive cases so far in its territory including active, discharged, and deceased patients.
The current reporting of 874 cases has become the highest single-day rise marked by the state since the outbreak, surpassing the previous tally of 827 cases that were reported on Thursday, and the sharpest spikes had exemplified the grounds of the rapid spread of the pandemic amid the containment strategies. The state health department has put out the latest developments concerning the outbreak in the state.

According to the official press release, the state has tested 4,66,550 samples including 11,334 that were tested on Friday of which 874 returned positive to the virus. These 874 cases include 141 people who returned to the state from other regions by air and road (135 people came from Maharashtra, three from Kerala, one each from West Bengal, Telangana, and Karnataka).
Of these 874 cases, 518 are males while the rest 356 are female patients and 618 belong to Chennai, 61 belong to Chengalpattu - through which the district has reported 1000 cases so far, 48 belong to Thiruvannamalai, 19 belong to Kallakurichi, 15 belong to Tirunelveli, 12 belong to Kancheepuram, nine belong to Thirvallur, five belong to Cuddalore, and three belong to Ariyalur.
One each from Erode, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Trichy, Villupuram, and Virudhunagar and apart from the district-wise abstract, 72 people are currently at railway quarantine and six, who were domestic passengers, are currently under the airport quarantine after testing positive for the virus. The state has reported 765 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 11,313 so far and for the past five days, the total count of discharges stands high than the active COVID-19 cases.
The state has also reported nine fresh fatalities taking the death toll to 154 and of these nine, seven were from Chennai while one was from Chengalpattu and the other was from Thiruvallur. Most of the deceased are above 60 years of age and reported with co-morbid conditions like diabetes and hypertension and the state has recorded about 50 deaths in the past six days.
With the current reporting of 618 cases, Chennai has crossed the tally of 13,000 by reporting 13,362 cases so far of which 6,353 are active, 6,895 have been discharged while 113 had died in the city so far which are more than 75% of the total numbers of cases and deaths reported by the state.
As of Friday evening, the state has reported 20,246 positive cases so far of which 8,776 are active - including isolation, 11,313 have been discharged, and 154 had succumbed to the virus. Tamil Nadu is just three days ahead to mark the deadline of the current spell of the lockdown. According to the reports, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami will be convening a meet with the expert committee on Saturday -May 30, on the lockdown extension amid soaring high cases.
