The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 1,843 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Monday through which the state's total tally went past 46,000 by reporting 46,504 cases so far in its territory including the active, recovered, and deceased patients.
The current reporting has become one of the highest single-day rises recorded by the state since the outbreak and the state has reported more than a thousand cases for the 16th consecutive day and the tally had neared 2,000 for the past few days amid the containment strategies. The state health department has put out the press release highlighting the latest developments concerning the outbreak in the state.
According to the press release, Tamil Nadu has tested 7,29,002 samples so far - highest in the nation including 18,403 that were tested on Monday of which 1,843 returned positive taking the state's tally to the new high. These 1,843 cases include 54 people who returned to the state from other regions. 18 came from Maharashtra, 11 came from Delhi, four each from Karnataka, Muscat, and Qatar.

Three from Kerala, two each from Malaysia and Rajasthan, and one each from Doha, Dubai, UAE, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh. Of these 1,843 cases, 1,132 are males, 710 are female patients and one transgender. About 75% of the current reporting recorded at the four worst-hit districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, and Chengalpattu.
The press release indicated that 1,257 people belong to Chennai, 120 from Chengalpattu, 50 from Thiruvallur, and 39 from Kancheepuram. The state has reported 797 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 25,344 so far and unexpectedly, the state has recorded 44 new deaths, which had become the highest single-day rise in the death toll and the state's death toll currently stands at 479. The press release stated that of these 44, 32 were reported at the government hospitals while the rest 12 were from the private hospitals.
According to the press release, of these 44 deaths, 35 belong to Chennai and of the remaining nine, five belong to Thiruvallur, three belong to Chengalpattu, and one was from Krishnagiri and 33 deceased people were identified with co-morbid conditions including diabetes and hypertension which have become the larger factor of the death caused by the pandemic. On June 9, the state's death toll was at 307 and the state has added 172 deaths within a week putting the total death toll to 479.
Chennai has crossed the total tally of 33,000 and with the current reporting of 1,257 cases, the city has recorded 33,244 cases so far and the city's tally is about 70% of the total affected cases in the state, levying a huge challenge for the government in flattening the COVID-19 affected curve. While addressing the reports on Monday, Health Minister Vijayabaskar said Chennai has tested over 1,80,000 tests so far. As of Monday evening, the state has reported 46,504 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra, of which 20,678 are active - including isolation, 25,344 have been discharged, and 479 had succumbed to the virus.
The Tamil Nadu state government has, on Monday, announced that it has imposed the complete lockdown in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur for 12 days from June 19 to June 30 in the wake of the exponential rise of the COVID-19 cases.
