The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 1,685 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Tuesday which have taken the state's total tally beyond 34,000 by reporting 34,914 cases so far in its territory including active, recovered, and deceased cases.
The current reporting of 1,685 cases has become the highest single-day rise recorded by the state since the outbreak which has surpassed the previous tally of 1,562 cases that were reported on Monday and the state has reported over 1,500 cases for the third consecutive day and crossed a thousand cases for the tenth consecutive day, signaling the rapid spread, particularly in Chennai.

According to the official press release issued by the state health department on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu has tested 6,21,171 samples so far- highest in the country, including 13,219 that were tested on Tuesday of which 1,685 returned positive for the virus. These 1,685 cases include 36 people who returned to Tamil Nadu from other states.
The press release stated that 17 people came from Delhi, six from Maharashtra, three each from Kuwait and Karnataka, two from Andhra Pradesh, and one each from Dammam, Maldives, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Punjab. The current reporting of 1,685 includes 1,091 males and the rest 594 are female patients.
Of these 1,685, 1,243 belong to Chennai, 158 belong to Chengalpattu, 90 belong to Thiruvallur, 32 belong to Kancheepuram, 19 belong to Thiruvannamalai, 16 each from Madurai and Vellore, ten each from Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, eight from Thanjavur, seven each from Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur, six each from Dindigul and Ramanathapuram and five belong to Coimbatore.
Four each from Pudukottai and Trichy, three each from Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, and Salem, two from Theni, and one each from Dharmapuri, Kanyakumari, Perambalur, Ranipet, Villupuram, and Virudhunagar. Apart from the district-wise abstract, 12 people are kept under airport quarantine and 15 are under railway quarantine.
The state has reported 798 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 18,325 so far. The state has also recorded 21 fatalities- the highest single-day rise in the number of deaths since the outbreak through which the death toll currently stands at 307. Tamil Nadu has become the sixth state in India to cross the death toll of 300 and in the last six days, the state has added about 100 deaths to its count.
According to the press release, of these 21 deaths, 20 belong to Chennai while one belonged to Thiruvallur. Out of these 21, 16 deceased had co-morbid conditions which are one of the larger factors causing the death due to the pandemic. With the current reporting of 1,243 cases, Chennai has crossed the tally of 24,000 by recording 24,545 cases- two-thirds of the total tally reported by the state.
As of Tuesday evening, the state has reported 34,914 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra, of which 16,279 are active - including isolation, 18,325 have been discharged, and 307 had succumbed to the virus.
