COVID-19: TN reports 1,989 cases and 30 fatalities as the tally went beyond 42,000!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 1,989 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Saturday which have contributed the state to hit the tally beyond 42,000 by reporting 42,687 cases so far in its territory including active, recovered, and deceased cases. 

The current reporting of 1,989 cases has been recorded as the highest single-day spike since the outbreak surpassing the previous tally of 1,987 cases that were reported earlier this week. By this time on June 9, the state had crossed the tally of 34,000 cases and in the span of five days, the state has added about eight thousand houses to its count as it has been reeling under the faltering grounds amid the containment strategies and restrictions. 

According to the official press release issued by the health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 6,91,817 samples so far - highest in the country, including 17,911 that were tested on Saturday of which 1,989 returned positive for the virus. These 1,989 cases include 33 people who returned to the state from other regions. 

 

12 people came from Maharashtra, ten came from Qatar, two each from Ethiopia and Kerala, and one each from Oman, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Bangladesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Karnataka and the current reporting includes 1,183 males and 806 female patients.

Of these 1,989 cases, more than 85% of cases reported from worst-hit districts in the state including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur. Chennai has reported 1,487 cases, 136 belong to Chengalpattu, 78 belong to Thiruvallur, and 22 belong to Kancheepuram. The state has reported 1,362 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 23,409 so far and the discharge tally is higher than the active cases in the state.

The state has recorded more than a thousand discharges for the third consecutive day. In the albeit of discharges, the state has also recorded 30 fresh deaths - the highest single-day rise in the death toll since the outbreak, and with the unprecedented rise of the death count, the state's death toll currently stands at 397. According to the press release, of these 30, 18 were recorded in the government hospitals while the rest 12 were at the private hospitals. 

Of these 30 deaths, 25 belong to Chennai and the rest five were recorded at Thiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, and Chengalpattu respectively. About 23 deceased out of 30 were identified with the co-morbid conditions largely diabetes and hypertension. On June 9, the state's death toll was at 307 and the state has added 90 deaths in five days putting the total to 397.

With the current reporting of 1,487 cases, Chennai has crossed the tally of 30,000 by reporting 30,444 cases so far and the current reporting has become the highest single-day rise in the state as the surge in cases has levied huge concerns to the government in containing the spread. The city had accounted for 15,947 total discharges while 14,180 cases are currently under treatment. 

As of Saturday evening, the state has reported 42,687 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra, of which 18,878 are active - including isolation,  23,409 have been discharged, and 397 had succumbed to the virus.
