COVID-19: TN records highest single-day rise in deaths with 97 as the death toll soars!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 5,864 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Thursday through which the state's total nears 2.4 lakh by reporting 2,39,978 positive cases so far including active, recovered, and deceased patients.

According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 25,97,862 samples - highest in the country including 61,202 that were tested on Thursday of which 5,864 confirmed to have contracted the viral infection. These 5,864 cases include 53 people who returned to the state from other regions including the rest of India and from abroad.

 

Of these 5,864 cases, 3,560 are males and 2,304 are female patients. According to the press release, 18 districts of the state had contributed majorly to the current reporting. Chennai has reported 1,175 cases, 354 cases from Chengalpattu, 325 cases from Thiruvallur, 303 cases belong to Coimbatore, 277 cases from Tirunelveli, 272 cases from Ranipet, and Theni has reported 261 cases.

Kanyakumari has reported 248 cases, Virudhunagar has reported 244 cases, 220 cases each from Thoothukudi and Madurai, 187 cases from Thiruvannamalai, 184 cases from Vellore, 175 cases from Kancheepuram, 141 cases belong to Cuddalore, 138 cases belong to Dindigul, 128 and 118 cases from Pudukottai and Trichy respectively. 

The state has reported 5,295 fresh discharges which had taken the total tally of discharges to 1,78,178. According to the press release, the state has reported 97 fresh deaths- the highest single-day rise of the deaths in the state since the outbreak which had taken the death toll to 3,838. According to the Union Health Ministry, Tamil Nadu is the third Indian state with the most number of COVID-19 deaths, after Maharashtra and Delhi. 

Of these 97 deaths, 65 recorded at the government hospitals while the rest 32 recorded at the private establishments, 18 deaths belong to Chennai, eight from Tirunelveli, six from Thanjavur, five each from Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar, four each from Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Theni, and Vellore, three each from Dindigul, Kancheepuram, Pudukottai, Salem, Tenkasi, and Thiruvarur.

Two each from Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Thiruvallur, Thiruvannamalai, Tiruppur, and Villupuram. One each from Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, and Ranipet. 89 out of these 97 deaths had co-morbid conditions. On July 1, the state's death toll stood at 1,264 and within a month, the state has added 2,574 more deaths to its tally with at least 80 deaths per day on an average with a major rise in Chennai and active rise from the rest of the district. 

With the current reporting to 1,175 cases, Chennai has recorded 98,767 cases so far of which 83,890 have been discharged and 2,092 had died in the city amid the containment measures and lockdown. As of Thursday, Tamil Nadu has reported 2,39,978 cases so far of which 57,962 are active, 1,78,178 have been recovered, and 3,838 had succumbed to the virus. 

On Thursday, the Tamil Nadu state government has extended the lockdown till August 31 by carrying forward the existing norms and restrictions for the next month with some relaxations in Chennai and the state.
