The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 4,807 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Saturday and the unprecedented spike has taken the state's tally past 1.65 lakh by reporting 1,65,714 cases so far including the active, discharged, and deceased patients.
The reporting of 4,807 cases has been recorded as the state's highest single-day rise of cases since the outbreak as the state's tally has been getting a major contribution from Chennai and active contributions from other districts outside the capital city, amid the lockdown and containment measures. According to the official press release issued by the state's health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 18,79,499 samples so far.

The total tested samples include 48,195 samples that were tested on Saturday of which 4,807 returned positive. These 4,807 cases include the influx of 76 people who returned to the state from other regions. Of these 4,807 cases, 2,907 are males while the rest 1,900 are female patients. According to the press release, 19 districts have accounted for major caseloads in the current reporting.
Chennai has reported 1219 cases, 370 cases belong to Thiruvallur, 323 cases belong to Chengalpattu, 191 cases belong to Vellore, 185 cases belong to Madurai, 181 cases from Thanjavur, 179 cases belong to Virudhunagar, 176 cases belong to Sivagangai, 161 cases each from Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, 146 cases from Kanyakumari, 144 cases belong to Theni, and Trichy has reported 124 cases.
Coimbatore had reported 118 cases, 109 cases belong to Ranipet, 107 cases belong to Dindigul, 97 cases belong to Kancheepuram, 96 cases belong to Villupuram, and 92 cases belong to Tenkasi. The state has reported 3,049 fresh discharges taking the tally of total discharges to 1,13,856 so far. The state has recorded 88 new deaths - the highest single-day rise of deaths recorded by the state since the outbreak which had surpassed the previous tally of 79 deaths that were reported on Friday.
According to the press release, of these 88 deaths, 64 recorded in the government hospitals while the rest are recorded at the private establishments. Of these 88 deaths, 31 were recorded at Chennai, nine from Madurai, seven from Thiruvallur, five from Kancheepuram, four each from Ramanathapuram, Theni, and Vellore, three each from Salem and Thanjavur, two each from Chengalpattu, Dindigul, Thiruvannamalai, and Virudhunagar, and one each from Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Karur, Nilgiris, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Thirupathur, Thoothukudi, Trichy, and Villupuram.
82 out of 88 deaths were identified with co-morbid conditions. Chennai has been reporting between 1,200 and 1,300 cases each day for the past two weeks as the city has been witnessing a drop in cases as compared to June month. With the current reporting of 1219 cases, the city has recorded 84,598 cases so far. At the current state, the COVID-19 tally of 18 districts has crossed 2000 of which four districts- Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Madurai have crossed the tally of 8000 cases.
As of Saturday, Tamil Nadu has reported 1,65,714 cases so far of which 49,452 are active, 1,13,856 have been recovered, and 2,403 had succumbed to the virus. On Thursday, Union Health Ministry said Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are the two Indian states that contribute about 48% of the country's total active caseload and ten states account for 85% of the total active caseload.
