Tamil Nadu has been witnessing a big jump of Covid cases daily as the sequel of the third wave. The numbers have been soaring each day, walloping the government with a new ordeal of curbing the spread and addressing the health crisis. Amid restrictions and curfew, the rapid spread has become a threat to the state and within a short span of time, the number of active cases had reached a new height.
For the first time in recent months, the daily Covid cases in Tamil Nadu had reached closer to 30,000 and more frontline workers are contracting the infection. Shockingly, 25 police officers have tested positive for the pandemic in a day on Friday and of these 25 officers, 15 were Sub-Inspectors, eight were Inspectors, and two were DSPs. These police officers belong to the southern districts, particularly from Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts.
According to reports, all the police officers have been isolated at their residence and they could have contracted the viral infection while on the duty of enforcing the lockdown and curfews. According to the state health department, Tamil Nadu has reported 29,870 Covid cases, 21,684 discharges, and 33 deaths on Friday - January 21. Overall, the state has recorded 30,72,666 cases so far as of Friday of which 1,87,358 are active, 28,48,163 were discharged, and 37,145 had succumbed to the viral infection.
On Friday, the state government has announced a complete lockdown on Sunday - January 23. It will be the second complete lockdown on Sunday and in a release, the government has said that the restrictions and relaxations like the operation of essential services imposed on January 16 will be imposed again on January 23. As part of the brief relaxations, autorickshaws and cab services will be allowed to operate from important locations like Chennai Central, Egmore station, and Koyambedu bus terminus.
