The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 798 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Monday through which the state has crossed 8000 cases by reporting 8,002 cases so far in its territory including the active, recovered, and deceased patients.
The current reporting of 798 cases has become the highest single-day rise recorded by the state since the outbreak picturing the rampant spread in the state. On May 7th, the state has crossed 5000 cases and it has now added 3000 more cases to its count in the span of four days in an average of 750 cases per day. The sharpest rises have been alarming the government to accelerate its fight against the pandemic.
The state health department has released the official press release concerning the outbreak. According to the press release, Tamil Nadu has tested 2,54,899 samples so far including 11,862 that were tested on Monday of which 798 returned positive taking the total number of affected cases to 8,002. Of these 798, 514 are males and the rest 284 are female patients.

The press release stated that out of 798, 538 belong to Chennai, 97 belong to Thiruvallur, 90 belong to Chengalpattu, 33 belong to Ariyalur, ten belong to Tiruvannamalai, eight belong to Kancheepuram, four each from Madurai and Ramanathapuram, three each from Thanjavur and Thoothukudi, two belong to Dharmapuri, and one each from Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Perambalur, Ranipet, Vellore, and Virudhunagar.
The state has reported 92 fresh discharges on Monday taking the total number of discharges to 2,051 so far and it also has reported six new fatalities - which is the highest single-day rise of the number of fatalities through which the death toll crossed 50 and currently stands at 53 so far. According to the press release, a 50-year-old male, a 67-year-old female, a 32-year-old female, and a 36-year-old had died to the virus in Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital in Chennai.
A 66-year-old female and a 65-year-old male had succumbed to the virus at a private hospital in Chennai and the Kanyakumari Medical College Hospital respectively and all these six fatalities have identified with co-morbid conditions. The press release revealed that Chennai has been adding hundreds of cases to its count each day amid the restrictions and lockdown.
With the current numbers, Chennai has reported 4,371 cases so far - highest in the state and the city has contributed about 55-60% of the total affected cases in the state. On 9th May - Saturday, the city had 3,330 in its total, and in two days, the city has added 1041 cases to its count. Chennai's nodal officer Radhakrishnan has attributed the rise of the cases in the city to the increase in targeted testings in the Koyambedu and North Chennai clusters.
According to the reports, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has appealed to the Prime Minister, in the virtual meeting that held on Monday, not to resume the train and flight services in Tamil Nadu till May 31st as the cases have been surging high. By this time on April 23, the state had reported 908 active cases and now it has reported 5,895 active cases. As of Monday evening, the state has reported 8,002 positive cases so far of which 5,895 are active, 2,051 have been discharged, and 53 had succumbed to the virus.
