COVID-19: Tamil Nadu reports 231 fresh cases of which 174 belong to Chennai!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 231 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Saturday putting the total number of affected cases to 2,757 so far in its territory including the active, discharged, and deceased patients. 

The state has been reporting soaring high cases for the past few days that not only increase the total numbers but also surpasses the previous records of the highest single-day rises. The current reporting of 231 cases has recorded as the highest single-day rise so far since the outbreak by surpassing the previous tally of 203 cases that were reported on Friday. 

 

In the last five days, the state reported more than 800 cases in its territory with an average of 160 cases per day, which is nearly double the number of total cases reported by Kerala so far, indicating the sharpest rise in the graph when the state government has been aiming to flatten the curve of COVID-19 affected cases. According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 1,39,490 samples so far including 10,127 that were tested on Saturday of which 231 returned positive. 

Of these 231 cases, 158 are male patients, 72 are females, and one transgender patient. The release revealed that 174 patients belong to Chennai, 18 belong to Ariyalur, 13 belong to Kancheepuram, 7 belong to Tiruvallur, 5 belong to Chengalpattu, two each from Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ramanathapuram, Tiruppur, and Villupuram while one each from Theni, Salem, Madurai, and Coimbatore. 

According to the press release, 35,418 are currently under home quarantine while 40 people have been admitted to the government quarantine facilities. The state has recorded 29 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 1,341 so far while the state has also reported one fresh fatality, where a 76-year-old female from Chennai had died due to the virus infection through which the death toll stands at 29. She was getting treated at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in the city.

Of these 231 cases, four belong to the age category of under ten including a 14 days old female infant in Kancheepuram. Amid the strict restrictions, the cases have been surging in Chennai as the city has contributed about 85% of the cases for the past four days and it has accounted for nearly 45% of total cases in the state so far.  With the current numbers, the capital city has 1,257 cases - the highest in the state. On Friday, State Health Minister Vijayabaskar said that more than 90% of cases in Chennai were asymptomatic.

As of Saturday evening, the state has reported 2,757 positive cases of which 1,384 are active patients, 1,341 have been discharged while 29, including the fresh fatality, had succumbed to the virus. On Saturday, the state government has extended the lockdown till May 17 by imposing tight restrictions on the hotspots and the containment zones.
