The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 161 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Thursday taking the total number of affected cases to 2,323 so far in its territory including the active, discharged, and deceased patients.

The current reporting of 161 cases has become the highest-single day rise recorded by the state since the outbreak of the pandemic amid the measures rolled out by the state government to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 affected cases. The state has been closing the month of April with witnessing soaring cases in the last week of the month and the current reporting had sharply increased the graph of the total affected cases.

The state has reported more than a hundred cases for the third consecutive day when it's just three days away to mark the end of the extended spell of the lockdown. On Tuesday, the state reported 121 cases while the number stood at 104 on Wednesday. The state health department has released the latest developments concerning the outbreak. According to the official press release, the state has tested 1,19,748 samples so far including 9,787 that were tested on Thursday of which 161 had returned positive taking the total number to 2,323.

The current reporting has surpassed the previous tally of the highest single-day rise which was recorded on Tuesday after the state reported 121 fresh cases. Of these fresh 161 cases, 97 are male patients while the rest are females and 138 belong to Chennai alone, five each from Madurai and Chengalpattu, three each from Ramanathapuram and Kancheepuram, two belong to Perambalur and one each from Tiruvallur, Salem, Ranipet, Cuddalore, and Ariyalur.

The press release stated that 31,375 people have currently been kept under home quarantine and 40 are kept in the government quarantine facilities.
