COVID-19: Phoenix mall comes under scanner - Is it an emerging epicenter?

Phoenix mall, one of the biggest malls in Chennai, has now been brought under the scanner of the Greater Chennai Corporation after three workers of the establishment were tested positive for the Coronavirus. The workers have been identified as the employees of the Lifestyle showroom in the mall, which sits on Velachery, Chennai.

On Thursday, the Greater Chennai Corporation has issued the advisory for those who had visited the Lifestyle showroom in the mall between March 10 and March 17 and the workers in the mall to stay cautious and reach out to the immediate medical care if they are showing any positive symptoms for the virus and the corporation has stated that the workers who are attached to the showroom have been identified and kept under home quarantine to contain the spread.

On March 27th, a 25-year-old woman employee of the Lifestyle showroom was tested positive for the virus and she has been currently getting treated under isolation in Ariyalur Government Hospital. Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Beela Rajesh said that the woman contracted the virus from a man- a native of Kerala who was later tested positive in Sri Lanka. Exactly four days after she was infected, one of her co-workers who is a 28-year-old man was tested positive for the virus on March 31st and he was 69th in the state affected by the pandemic and he has been treated in the Tiruvannamalai Government Hospital.

Apart from these two employees, one more employee has declared positive for the virus recently making the mall as the emerging epicenter for the virus in the city, which currently houses more number of cases in the state. After the mall has been brought under the scanner, the state public health authorities have been tracing and directly tracking all employees of the mall directing them to remain under self-quarantine and the employees are advised to reach out to the government through the helplines installed in the wake of the outbreak.

According to the reports, the health authorities have reached out to 3000 visitors who visited the mall from March 10 to March 17 and the civic body has been following up around 360 employees and monitoring them. On Tuesday, the Chennai Corporation has announced that a man who visited the visa application center at Good Shepherd Building on Kodambakkam High Road on March 15th was tested positive for the virus and appealed to the people who had visited the visa center on that particular date to isolate themselves.

As of Friday, the state of Tamil Nadu has reported with 309 positive cases second highest in India and of these positive cases, 302 are active patients while six have been recovered and one has died to the virus and the rest of the patients including Indians and foreign nationals have been treated at various hospitals across the state.
