The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 646 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Tuesday taking the total number of affected cases to 17,728 so far in its territory including active, discharged, and deceased patients. The state has also recorded nine fresh fatalities putting the tally to 127 deaths so far.
According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 4,31,739 samples so far including 10,289 that were tested on Tuesday of which 646 returned positive for the pandemic. These 646 cases include 54 patients who returned to the state from other regions (35 from Maharashtra, six from Gujarat, five from Dubai, three from Telangana, two each from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, and one from Kerala).

Of these 646, 386 are males and the rest 260 are female patients and 510 belong to Chennai, 25 belong to Thiruvallur, 23 belong to Chengalpattu, 14 belong to Thiruvannamalai, 13 belong to Kancheepuram, 10 each from Salem and Thoothukudi, eight each from Cuddalore and Kallakurichi, four from Kanyakumari, three from Vellore.
Two each from Madurai, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri, and one each from Ariyalur, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Ranipet, Thirupathur, and Virudhunagar. Apart from the district abstract, five people who came from Dubai have been kept under the airport quarantine and one patient has been under the railway quarantine.
The state has reported 611 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 9,342. For the second consecutive day, the state has recorded more discharges than the active cases at the overall count.
The state has also recorded nine deaths of which seven belong to Chennai, one belongs to Chengalpattu and the other belongs to Tiruvannamalai. Of these nine deceased, eight had co-morbid conditions with diabetes and hypertension. For the last three days, the state has added 24 deaths to its count and the death toll currently stands at 127.
Chennai is nearing to hit the tally of 12,000 and with the current reporting of 510 cases, the city has recorded 11,640 cases so far which is about 60-70% of the total affected cases in the state. As of Tuesday evening, the state has reported 17,728 positive cases so far of which 8,256 are active - including isolation, 9,342 have been discharged, and 127 had succumbed to the virus.
On Monday, Health Minister Vijayabaskar said that the number of COVID-19 cases would go high in the state due to the influx of people from other regions particularly from the worst-hit regions as the influx and the resumption of the domestic passenger flight services would levy huge challenge to the government.
