The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 817 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday taking the total number of affected cases to 18,545 so far in its territory including the active, recovered, and deceased patients.
According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 4,42,970 samples so far - highest in the country including 11,231 that were tested on Wednesday of which 817 returned positive. The current reporting of 827 includes 139 people who returned to the state from other regions (138 came from Maharashtra and one came from Kerala). The influx from Maharashtra has been reporting more cases for the past few days.

Of 817 cases, 508 are males while the rest 309 are female patients and 558 belong to Chennai, 74 belong to Kallakurichi, 40 belong to Thiruvallur, 31 belong to Chengalpattu, 21 belong to Thiruvannamalai, 14 belong to Kancheepuram, eight belongs to Madurai, seven from Thoothukudi, five each from Ariyalur, Thiruvarur, and Villupuram, four belong to Tirunelveli.
Three each from Cuddalore and Trichy, two belong to Sivagangai, one each from Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Thirupathur, Ramanathapuram. Apart from the district wise abstract, 31 people have been kept under the railway quarantine. The state has reported 567 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 9,909.
The state nears to hit the tally of 10,000 in total discharges and for the third consecutive day, the state has recorded more discharges and than the active cases. The press release stated that the state has recorded six fatalities through which the death toll currently stands at 133. Out of six deaths, four belong to Chennai while one was reported in Chengalpattu and the other belongs to Thiruvallur and four deceased had co-morbid conditions including diabetes and hypertension.
With Wednesday's tally, Chennai has crossed 12,000 cases and with the current reporting of 558 cases, the city has recorded 12,203 so far- highest in the state and one of the highest numbers reported in major cities of the country. As of Wednesday evening, the state has reported 18,454 positive cases so far of which 8,500 are active - including isolation, 9,909 have been discharged, and 133 had succumbed to the virus.
On Monday, Health Minister Vijayabaskar said that the number of COVID-19 cases would go high in the state due to the influx of people from other regions particularly from the worst-hit regions as the influx and the resumption of the domestic passenger flight services would levy huge challenge to the government. The health expert committee has warned the government to carry out more and aggressive testing failing which Chennai would see 2 lakh cases by June end with at least 1,400 deaths.
