COVID-19: India reports nearly 96,000 fresh cases - the highest single day spike in the world!

India has reported the biggest spike of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the last 24 hours which had taken the tally close to 4.5 million. The country has been witnessing the fastest growth in fresh infections globally, while it has been enjoying large-scale relaxations from the lockdown and restrictions.

According to the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 95,735 fresh cases in the last 24 hours till Thursday morning 8 am, which had been recorded as the highest single-day rise since the outbreak and the highest spike in the world in the last 24 hours. The country has seen 1,172 fresh deaths during the same course of time taking the death toll to 75,062 so far.

The data of the Health Ministry had shown 34,71,783 people have been recovered and discharged while 9,19,018 are active cases in the country, which is about 20.58% of the total tally of cases. As of Thursday morning, India has reported 44,65,863 positive cases so far of which 9,19,018 are active, 34,71,783 have been recovered, and 75,062 had died of the viral infection.

At the current state, India's COVID-19 fatality rate stands at 1.68% while the recovery rate was recorded at 77.74 percent. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India has tested 5,29,34,433 samples so far including 11,29,756 that were tested in the last 24 hours.

COVID-19 cases are growing faster in the country than anywhere in the world and the authorities are attributing the sharpest spikes to the increase in the number of tests. India is the worst affected country by the pandemic in Asia and the second-worst affected in the world after the United States. With the current trend, India would likely surpass the tally of the United States by the end of this month as the country has strongly been affected by the wave amid its road to find the vaccine.

India's COVID-19 tally has crossed 20 lakh mark on August 7, while the tally went beyond 30 lakh on August 23, and 40 lakh on September 5.
