COVID-19: For the first time, TN reports 2,000 cases in a day as the tally crossed 50,000!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 2,174 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday through which the state's total tally went beyond 50,000 by reporting 50,193 cases so far in its territory including the active, recovered, and deceased patients. 

The current reporting of 2,174 cases has become the unprecedented single-day spike in cases recorded by the state since the outbreak and adding to that, the state crossed the tally of 2,000 for the first time which has exemplified the rampant spread amid the measures and containment strategies. The cases have been peaking in Tamil Nadu in the month of June as the heavy caseload in the fortnight had resulted in the state crossing the tally of 50,000.

According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 7,73,707 samples so far including 25,463 that were tested on Wednesday of which 2,174 returned positive for the virus. These 2,174 cases include 80 people who returned to the state from other regions. 38 people came from Maharashtra, seven from Karnataka, five each from UAE and Kerala.

 

Four each from Saudi Arabia, Odisha, Delhi, three from Singapore, two each from Kuwait, Malaysia, and Rajasthan and one each from West Bengal and Jharkhand. Of these 2,174 people, 1,367 are males, 805 are females, and the rest two are transgenders and the worst-affected districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Thiruvallur, and Chengalpattu had contributed to more cases for the current reporting.

The press release stated that 1,276 people belong to Chennai, 162 from Chengalpattu, 90 belong to Thiruvallur, and 61 belong to Kancheepuram and the sequel of high cases from these districts have let the government impose strict lockdown for 12 days from June 19 to June 30. The state has reported 842 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 27,624 so far which is highest than the COVID-19 active cases in the state.

Tamil Nadu has also reported 48 deaths through which the death toll currently stands at 576. Of these 48 deaths, 38 reported in the government hospitals and 10 from the private hospitals. According to the press release, of these 48 deaths, 40 belong to Chennai of the remaining 8, two each from Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu, and one each from Thirvallur, Dindigul, Madurai, and Villupuram. 

38 out of these 48 deaths had reported with co-morbid conditions like Diabetes and Hypertension, which are one of the major causes of deaths along with geriatrics. The state has been recording the sharpest rises in the death toll for the past few days, causing a deep worry for the state. By this time on June 12, the state had recorded the death toll of 367 and in the span of five days, the state has added about 200 deaths to its count, through which it has become the fourth Indian state with the most number of deaths.

With the current reporting of 1,276, Chennai has recorded 35,556 cases so far accounting for larger contributions in the state tallies of positive cases and deaths. Of the state's total death toll of 576, Chennai has reported for 461 deaths. As of Wednesday evening, the state has reported 50,193 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra, of which 21,990 are active - including isolation, 27,624 have been discharged, and 576 had succumbed to the virus.
