COVID-19: For the first time, TN has hit 50,000 active cases as the virus spread soars!

The sequel of the active caseloads from the districts outside Chennai and the major contribution from the capital city have combinedly led the state to mark the new peak of cases as the state of Tamil Nadu has crossed the tally of 50,000 in active cases by reporting 50,294 cases so far as of Sunday.

The state has been reporting over 4,500 cases each day for the last week and the state's single-day tally has attained the peak on Sunday by reporting 4,979 fresh cases. According to the reports, the active cases rose 26% on Sunday compared to the percentile that was reported at the beginning of July.

The unexpected rise amid the containment measures has come when the state has asserted that it has been doing the highest number of COVID-19 testing in India. Tamil Nadu has tested 19.3 lakh samples so far as of Sunday and on Sunday alone, the state has collected 51,640 swab samples - the highest since the outbreak, according to the state health department.

The experts attribute the rise of cases to the active caseloads in the districts outside Chennai including the neighboring districts. However, Chennai has seen a positive sign after reporting a decline in active cases. Chennai's positive case rate dropped by 36% comparing to the rate that was reported at the beginning of July. In the albeit of reporting over 2000 cases in the last week of June, Chennai has been reporting about 1,200 cases for the past two weeks.

Amid the containment measures, the cases in Chennai neighboring districts of Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram and the southern districts of the state have been soaring. The reports stated that ten southern districts of the state including Madurai have reported 29,175 cases so far of which over 50% are active cases currently undergoing treatment.

The reports say Madurai district is awaiting the results of 4,000 samples and the district would likely see the spike of fresh cases after the declaration of the results. In Chennai, corporation commissioner has said that the positive rate has declined to 5% from 8% in the north Chennai zones including Tondiarpet and Royapuram - which have been listed as the hotspot for the virus spread in the city.

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu has reported  4,979 new cases, 1,17,915 fresh discharges, and 78 new deaths. Of these 78 deaths, 42 deaths were from Chennai and 20 were from the southern districts.
