COVID-19: Chennai sees the highest spike with 1,012 cases as TN crossed 25,000!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 1,286 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) taking the total number of affected cases in the state to 25,872 so far in its territory including active, discharged, and deceased patients. 

The state has reported over 5000 COVID-19 cases in the span of five days and the numbers alarmingly are peaking high in the state amid the fifth phase of the lockdown and the state has reported 1000 cases for the fourth consecutive day with the sharpest rise in Chennai. The current reporting of 1,286 has become the highest single-day rise in the state since the outbreak surpassing the previous tally of 1,162 cases that were reported on Monday.

 

According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 5,28,534 samples including 14,1010 that were tested today of which 1,286 samples returned positive. These 1,286 cases include 42 people who came to the state from other regions (16 came from Maharashtra, 13 from Dubai, five from Delhi, three from Gujarat, two each from Karnataka and UAE, and one from Karnataka).

Of these 1,286 cases, 787 are males, 498 are female patients while one was the transgender and 1,012 belong to Chennai, 61 belong to Chengalpattu, 58 belong to Thiruvallur, 21 from Thiruvannamalai, 19 from Kancheepuram, 17 from Thoothukudi, 12 from Tirunelveli, nine from Coimbatore, seven belong to Madurai, six each from Thanjavur and Cuddalore.

Five each from Ramanathapuram and Ranipet, four each from Kallakurichi, Tenkasi, Thirupathur, and Vellore, three belong to Salem, two belong to Thiruvarur, and one each from Dharmapuri, Kanyakumari, Karur, Nagapattinam, Namakkal, Theni, Villupuram, and Virudhunagar. The state has reported 610 fresh discharges through which the total number of discharges stands at 14,316 so far, which is highest than the active number of cases.

The state has also recorded 11 fatalities taking the death toll to 208. According to the Union Health Ministry, Tamil Nadu is the eighth Indian state to cross 200 deaths. The state health department's press release stated that of these 11 deceased, eight belong to Chennai while the rest three belong to Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Trichy and nine deceased had co-morbid conditions like Diabetes and Hypertension and the state has been reporting at least ten fatalities each day for the past few days.

Chennai has largely contributed to the state's total cases and death toll. With the current reporting of 1,012 cases, the city has recorded 17,598 cases and out of the state's death toll of 208, Chennai has accounted for 158 deaths. However, in the albeit of soaring high cases, the city has recorded 9,034 discharges so far.

As of Wednesday evening, the state has reported 25,872 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra of which 11,345 are active - including isolation, 14,316 have been discharged, and 208 had succumbed to the virus. The state is going through the fifth phase of the lockdown and on Tuesday, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has attributed the sharpest rise in positive cases to the rise in the number of COVID-19 testing. The state currently performs the highest number of testing in India.
