Amid the complete lockdown, Chennai has been staying as an active and biggest COVID-19 hotspot in Tamil Nadu in the wake of the sharpest surge in the cases of viral infection at all levels of life from Chief Secretariat to a petty shop in the city as the pandemic has got the grounds for a rapid spread.
While Chennai has become a huge challenge for the state government in containing the spread, six major zones in the city have become a challenge for the city's administration as these six major zones have reported with heavy caseloads. Currently, the city has demarcated with 15 active zones based on which the cases have been tracked.
According to the Chennai Corporation, Royapuram area, which is zone 5, has the highest number of cases in Chennai by reporting 6484 positive cases so far as of Tuesday morning, followed by Tondiarpet -Zone 4 with 5227 cases, Teynampat - Zone 9 with 5110 cases, Kodambakkam - zone 10 with 4649 cases, Anna Nagar - Zone 8 with 4585 cases, and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar - Zone 6 with 3628 cases.

These six zones have majorly contributed to the rise of cases in Chennai. Following these zones, Adyar - Zone 13 has 2531 cases, Valasarawakkam -Zone 11 has reported 1784 cases, Ambattur - Zone 7 with 1601 cases, Thiruvottiyur -Zone 1 has 1587 cases, Madhavaram -Zone 3 with 1,191 cases, Alandur - Zone 12 with 965 cases, Perungudi - Zone 14 has reported 884 cases, Sholinganallur - Zone 15 has 808 cases and Manali - Zone 2 has the least count in the city with 624 cases.
According to the health department of the Chennai Corporation, the city has 61 containment areas in its 15 zones as of June 22 morning. These containment areas have been located in the eight zones of the city -Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Perungudi, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Tondiarpet, and Shollinganallur while the rest seven zones have no containment areas.
Of these 61 areas, 12 were under containment since May 28 while the rest 49 areas have been demarcated under containment in June. Corporation Commissioner Prakash said that there are over 1.20 lakh houses sealed in Chennai for containment as of June 22. According to the corporation's data, the top six zones in the city have 12,405 active cases currently as of Tuesday morning.

On Monday, the city has reported yet another spike of COVID-19 cases by adding 1,487 fresh cases to its count which had taken the city's tally to 42,752 which is two-third of the state's total tally. Of these 42,752 cases, 18,372 are active, 23, 756 have discharged, and 623 had succumbed to the virus. The top six zones in the city account for more than 50% of active cases by reporting 12,405 cases and of these six zones, five zones have active cases of over 2,000 each except Thiru Vi Ka Nagar.
With the tally of 42,752 COVID-19 cases, Chennai is the third Indian city with the most number of COVID-19 cases after Mumbai and Delhi and the Tamil Nadu government has imposed the intense lockdown in the city to control the spike and to flatten the curve of affected cases.
