COVID-19: Chennai has crossed 5000 cases while TN nears to hit 10,000!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 509 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday taking the total number of affected cases to 9,227 so far in its territory including the active, recovered, and deceased patients. The state has also recorded three fresh fatalities that put the total death toll to 64. 

According to the official press release issued by the Tamil Nadu Health Department over the latest developments concerning the outbreak, the state has tested 2,79,467 samples so far including 12,780 that were tested on Wednesday of which 509 people have been confirmed to have contracted to the virus and the current reporting include 288 males and 221 female patients.

 

The press release stated that of these 509, 380 belong to Chennai, 25 each from Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu, 23 from Thiruvannamalai, 17 belong to Cuddalore, seven from Villupuram, five each from Theni, Tirunelveli, and airport quarantine - five people who returned from other countries tested positive on Wednesday following which they have been kept in the airport for quarantine, four each from Ariyalur and Kancheepuram, two each from Karur, Madurai, Nagapattinam, and one each from Perambalur, Thanjavur, and Thoothukudi. 

The state has reported 42 fresh discharges on Wednesday taking the total number of discharges to 2,176 and the state has also recorded three fresh fatalities through which the death toll currently stands at 64. On Tuesday, the state reported eight deaths which have been recorded as the highest single-day rise in the total number of deaths. 

According to the press release, a 41-year-old male had died due to the infection in Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai while a 43-year-old male and a 48-year-old male had succumbed to the virus at the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hosptial in the city. All three fatalities belong to Chennai and they had died due to respiratory failure. 

Despite the measures and combat efforts, Chennai has been witnessing soaring high cases in its territory. The city has recorded nearly 2000 cases in the last four days as it has emerged as the active and biggest hotspot in the state. With the current reporting of 380 cases, Chennai has crossed the tally of 5000 cases by reporting 5,262 so far which is 50% of the total affected cases in the state. Chennai has been one of the major Indian cities to report more than 5000 cases. 

In the span of three weeks, the state has reported over 6000 active cases that has been exemplifying the sharpest rise in the COVID-19 cases amid the lockdown. As of Wednesday evening, the state has reported 9,227 positive cases so far of which 6,984 are active, 2,176 have been discharged, and 64 had succumbed to the virus. Tamil Nadu nears to hit 10,000 cases. 

By this time last week, the state has reported 5000 cases and the numbers have now been doubled. Tamil Nadu would be the second Indian state to cross 10,000 cases after Maharashtra, which has reported 24,427 cases so far as of Wednesday, according to the Union Health Ministry.
