The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 2,396 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Saturday which had become the highest single-day spike recorded by the state since the outbreak and the biggest jump of cases has taken the state's tally beyond 56,000 by reporting 56,845 cases so far including active, recovered, and deceased patients.
Through the current reporting of 2,396 cases, the state has reported 2,000 cases for the fourth consecutive day with the major contribution from Chennai and three of its adjacent districts.
According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 8,61,211 samples so far including 33,231 samples that were tested on Saturday - highest single-day testing since the outbreak, of which 2,396 tested positive.

These 2,396 cases include 64 people who returned to the state from other regions (22 came from Delhi, 14 from Oman, 12 from Maharashtra, six from Karnataka, four from Kerala, three from Goa, and one each from Singapore, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh. Of these 2,396 cases, 1,254 belong to Chennai, 180 belong to Chengalpattu, 131 belong to Thiruvallur, and 87 from Kancheepuram.
These four districts have been the worst-affected ones in Tamil Nadu due to which the government has imposed intense lockdown in these districts for 12 days from June 19 to June 30. The state has reported 1,045 fresh discharges through which the tally of the total number of discharges stands at 31,316 so far - highest than the active COVID-19 cases.
The state has also recorded 38 fresh deaths taking the death toll to 704. According to the press release, of these 38 deaths, 24 were recorded at the government hospitals, and the rest were reported from the private establishments. Of these 38 deaths, 30 belong to Chennai and of the remaining eight deaths, four were from Chengalpattu and one each from Thiruvallur, Madurai, Thiruvannamalai, and Villupuram.
33 out of 38 deaths were identified with co-morbid conditions. By this time on June 16, the state had recorded 528 deaths and in the span of four days, the state has added about 170 more deaths to its count exemplifying the sharpest rises in deaths amid the lockdown and containment strategies. At the current state, Tamil Nadu is the fourth Indian state to have the most number of deaths caused by COVID-19 after Maharashtra, Delhi, and Gujarat.
With the current reporting of 1,254 cases, Chennai has recorded 39,641 cases so far and the city has largely contributed in the total active, recovered, and deceased cases recorded by the state. As of Saturday evening, the state has reported 56,845 positive cases so far of which 24,822 are active - including isolation, 31,316 have been discharged, and 704 had succumbed to the virus. At the current state, of 24,822 active cases in the state, Chennai and its three neighboring districts account for 20,778 active cases.
