COVID-19: With 2,115 fresh cases, TN has crossed 54,000 with 38,000 cases from Chennai!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 2,115 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Friday through which the state's tally has crossed 54,000 by reporting 54,449 cases so far including active, recovered, and deceased patients.

Through the current reporting, the state has reported more than 2,000 cases for the third consecutive day with the exponential rise of cases in Chennai and three of its neighboring districts amid the enhanced lockdown. According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 7,89,408 people so far including 25,902 that were tested on Friday of which 2,115 confirmed to have contracted to the virus. 

These 2,115 cases include 40 people who returned to Tamil Nadu from other regions through the available transportation channels including road, rail, and air. The press release stated that 15 people came from Delhi, 13 from Maharashtra, three from Karnataka, two each from Singapore, Rajasthan, and Bihar and one each from Maldives, Kerala, and Jharkhand. 

 

Of these 2,115 cases, 1,279 are males while the rest 836 are female patients and the majority of cases belong to Chennai and its adjacent districts. 1,322 cases belong to Chennai, 103 belong to Vellore, 95 from Chengalpattu, 85 from Thiruvallur, 58 cases belong to Madurai, and 39 cases reported from Kancheepuram. 

The state has reported 1,630 fresh discharges- one of the highest single-day rises of discharges through which the tally of total discharge stands at 30,271 and the state's tally of discharge is higher than the active COVID-19 cases. However, the state has been witnessing the sharpest spikes in the death toll. According to the press release, the state has recorded 41 fresh deaths taking the death toll to 666, an unprecedented spike in a short time.

Of these 41 deaths, 26 recorded at the government hospitals while the rest were from the private establishments. Out of 41 deaths, 29 belong to Chennai and of the remaining 12, three belong to Chengalpattu, two from Tirunelveli, one each from Hosur, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Madurai, Sivagangai, and Rameshwaram. 

According to the press release, 31 deceased had identified with the co-morbid conditions including diabetes and hypertension while the rest ten had succumbed to the virus without any comorbidities. Through the rapid spread of the virus, Chennai has become one of the major cities in India worst affected by the pandemic. With the current reporting of 1,322 cases, the city has crossed the tally of 38,327 so far -two-thirds of the state's total tally.  

Of the total death toll 666, the city has accounted for 529 deaths and the state has reported one of the highest single-day rises when Chennai and its three neighboring districts of Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur are going through the enhanced lockdown for 12 days from June 19 to June 30. As of Friday evening, the state has reported 54,449 positive cases so far of which 23,509 are active - including isolation, 30,271 have been discharged, and 666 had succumbed to the virus. At the current state, of 23,509 active cases in the state, Chennai and three districts account for 19,939 active cases.
