Corona outbreak: Tamil Nadu reports 508 fresh cases- How much in Chennai?

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 508 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Tuesday taking the total number of affected cases to 4,058 so far in its territory including the active, recovered, and deceased patients. 

The current reporting of 508 cases has exemplified yet another highest-single day rise recorded by the state as the graph of the total affected cases has been facing upward direction amid the measures deployed by the state government to flatten the curve of COVID-19 affected cases. For the last eight days, the state has added at least 220 cases per day on an average. 

Nearly 1,700 cases have been getting reported since last week with soaring contribution from Chennai. As on April 23, the state had 908 active cases and in the span of ten days, the numbers were gone high as the state currently has 2,537 active cases as on Tuesday. According to the official press release issued by the health department, the state has tested 1,74,828 samples so far including 11,858 that were tested on Tuesday of which 508 had returned positive.

 

The press release stated that of these 508, 353 are male patients, 154 are females, and one transgender and 279 people belong to Chennai, 68 belong to Cuddalore, 38 each from Chengalpattu and Kallakurichi, 25 belong to Villupuram, 18 belong to Tiruvallur, 15 belong to Namakkal, seven belong to Dindigul, five belong to Theni, four belong to Nilgiris, and one each from Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram, Madurai, Perambalur, Salem, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Trichy.

The state has reported 76 fresh discharges taking the total numbers to 1,485 so far and it also has reported two fatalities. According to the release, a 56 year-old-male and a 60-year-old female had died due to the infection. Both the deceased belong to Chennai and they were getting treated in the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in the city and the death toll currently stands at 33. 

The press release further stated that most of the cases that tested positive on Tuesday had linked to the Koyambedu market, which has emerged as the new epicenter for the virus spread. In a short time, the Koyambedu cluster has reported over 400 positive cases as the cluster has spread across various districts including Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, and Kancheepuram leaving the government to temporarily shut down the market complex. 

Chennai has been reporting soaring high cases each day and it has added 279 cases on Tuesday through which the city has crossed 2000 cases - which is tripled the total number of cases Kerala has reported so far. The capital city currently has 2008 cases in its territory - the highest in the state and the corporation has been unleashing the preventive measures to stem the spread of the virus. However, the city's graph is witnessing the sharpest rise amid the lockdown and restrictions. 

While addressing the reporters on Tuesday, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami stated that the city has a dense and congested population that had let the city to record soaring cases of the virus each day and along with the population factor, the usage of the public toiletries has also been effecting to increase the cases. As of Tuesday evening, Tamil Nadu has reported 4,058 cases so far of which 2,537 are active, 1,485 have been recovered and 33, including the two fresh fatalities, have succumbed to the virus.
