The announcement of Chennai based SRM University to bestow an honorary doctorate for renowned lyricist Vairamuthu had spurred the controversies on Thursday that condemned the university for conferring the doctorate for the lyricist who has been accused of alleged sexual harassment by the scores of women.
The convocation ceremony at the university, in which he would be granted with the honor, is been scheduled on December 28th, 2019 Saturday and Union Minister Rajnath Singh was invited as a Chief Guest while chancellor of the university and DMK MP Paarivendhar would be presiding the event, according to the invitation. Since the announcement was made public, the two Hindu movements had opposed the ceremony and declared that it would hold the black flag protests in front of the SRM University that lies in the outskirts of Chennai.

Hindu Makkal Katchi and the Hindu Munnani were the movements that announced to carpet the protests and Hindu Munnani had cited that the lyricist had made controversial remarks against woman Saint Andal and despite Vairamuthu had regretted his remarks, the Hindu groups had staged huge protests against him across the state. Chief of Hindu Makkal Katchi Arjun Sampath has issued his condemnation to the event and called the event 'Hinduphobic'.
In last year October, Vairmuthu was surrounded by a row of controversies during when the 'MeToo' movement was on raise and the scores of women, including singer Chinmayi Sripada who was one among them of accusing the lyricist of harassing and of sexual misconduct at the workplace.

With the controversies being spurred around the university and the lyricist, the reports have now revealed that Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has canceled his participation at the event and his decision comes after the supporters of the BJP and Hindu movements had tagged him on Twitter insisting to refrain from participating in the event by citing the rise of the controversies against the lyricist.
The reports had cited that the University would be hosting the ceremony as informed and scheduled and the stage would be occupied with a different set of guests. However, the university has failed to disclose the possibilities of revoking its decision in honoring Vairamuthu with a doctorate.
