CM race in ADMK: Senior leaders have come up with a new 'deal' to end the tussle! What's in it?

In a bid to end the tussle and the existing feud between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister Panneerselvam over the power fight in winning the race for the Chief Minister for the upcoming state assembly polls, the senior leaders and ministers have been rolling out the hectic parleys between both the factions to attain an amicable resolution ahead of the assembly elections.

The parleys from the seniors have come a day ahead of the party's announcement of the Chief Ministerial candidate and as both the top leaders defending their rights in claiming the post of the Chief Minister, the reports close to the developments had strongly asserted that the party is less likely to announce the CM candidate on October 7.

Amid the growing tussle, both the leaders have been holding multiple rounds of discussions with their respective supporters separately in a bid to enhance their support and stronghold to win the CM race. What the state has been witnessed are the unprecedented political events that probably weren't witnessed by any of the political parties in the state that the ADMK as the parleys from the state ruling party to reach a consensus between the two factions have been going on for ten days with no sign of reaching an immediate, if not a long time, truce.

On Tuesday, exactly one day ahead of when the party said it would be announcing the CM candidate, the state had witnessed heavy parleys as the senior ministers had held back to back and to and fro discussions with Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister Panneerselvam to reach a consensus. With both the leaders have been involving in the tug-of-war, the senior leaders have now come with a deal and they had discussed about it with both the leaders.

Edappadi Palaniswami has been hoping to grip his power and control in the party while Panneerselvam has been demanding the party to name him as the CM candidate and to form a steering committee of the party, that was accepted as one of the conditions when the factions had merged in 2017. However, both the leaders have been unwilling to accept each other's demand which has been drifting the party. With the view of ending the tussle, senior leaders have now tabled a deal before both the leaders.

According to our sources, after the consecutive discussions, the senior leaders had put out the deal in which they had proposed Edappadi Palaniswami to be the CM candidate while Panneerselvam can be made as the Chief of the party's steering committee. Installing the 11-member steering committee has been the demand of Panneerselvam through which he eyed to pacify the leaders of his own factions by providing a place in the committee, which would likely be the decision-making body of the party.

During the discussions, the senior ministers had said to the Chief Minister that he would be named as the CM candidate as he holds major support from the party when it comes to the CM race. While iterating that Edappadi Palaniswami would be the CM candidate, the senior ministers had stressed the Chief Minister to form a steering committee as per the demand of Panneerselvam.

By citing that most of the party members voice for Panneerselvam's demand to bring the party under the one-man leadership, the senior ministers had asked the Chief Minister to install the committee and name Panneerselvam as its Chief, so that the latter may reach a consensus in the CM race by letting Edppadi Palaniswami to hold the post, amid being dubious on whether the party would win the assembly polls.

The sources say that the seniors had proposed a deal in a bid to end the tussle and with the view that Edappadi Palaniswami won't be vested with all the powers in the party and the rule. While it has been reported that Panneerselvam has been mulling to go with the deal, Edappadi Palaniswami has been un-friendly for the deal as the seniors have been trying to reach the consensus and to make the announcement of CM candidate on October 7.
