Ahead of having lighting up the challenge against the rejection of his anticipatory bail petition by Delhi High court, former Indian finance minister Chidambaram's appeal in the Supreme court had taken up for the hearing today.
The Supreme court bench comprising of Justices Banumathi and A S Bopanna had led the proceedings of the hearing, where senior lawyer and chair of Chidambaram's legal team Kabil Sibal had told the supreme bench of the court that the illegal clearance of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to INX Media group was approved by six secretaries to the government of India.
He further stated that the clearance was given by six secretaries including Economic Affairs secretary where one of the secretaries who let the exorbitant overseas funds in had became RBI governor. He added that his client, the then Finance minister Chidambaram had solely signed the clearance to INX Media group after it was approved by the team of secretaries in FIPB.
Denying the accusations that Chidambaram's son Karti had direct involvements, Kabil Sibal had argued that none of the secretaries who were interrogated by the investigative agencies have told that they ever met Karti Chidambaram and said that Chidambaram and his son Karti had nothing do to with the alleged connection that was made by Enforcement directorate that Advantage Strategic Consulting Private ltd company was owned by Karti, where the agencies have claimed to locate the documents in connection to INX Media case.
He further challenged Enforcement Directorate on its claim of identifying 17 bank accounts and ten of the overseas properties which were registered by Chidambaram's name and urged Enforcement Directorate to show one such bank account and one such property here in the courthouse and he will withdraw the appeal.
On Friday, the Apex court had given interim relief for Chidambaram from getting arrested by the Enforcement directorate in the case of money laundering in connection INX Media case and the deadline ends today. His move of hammering the Supreme court to seek interim relief, was after Delhi's high court rejected his anticipatory bail petition.
On the other hand, Chidambaram was taken into custodial interrogation of five days by Central Investigative Bureau (CBI) on August 22nd which also touch down its deadline today, ahead to which he is now been produced before Delhi CBI court and the reports say that CBI will file its petition to extend the custodial interrogation by citing the importance of the case of INX Media, which had acquired exorbitant overseas funds more than Rs 300 crores from Mauritius through illegal clearance from the FIPB by the mediation of Karti when Chidambaram was India's finance minister.
